United Flight Numbers 8XXX

When a flight has a flight number that is four (4) digits and the first number is eight (8), is that a charted flight? Is that a flight carrying pax from a prior canceled flight?

I.E. Flights 8861, etc.

The example I gave (8862) was IAD-DEN. Only UA serves this flight (of the Star Alliance Partners).

I thought 9XXX was charter, or when a plane is flown to where ever to get mantainance. Examples, AA 9301 was AUS-Washington DC that Bush flew on the retro 738. AA 9XXX is LAX-AFW (Alliance Facility).

I think that it is a combination of two flights. I went from SAN to LAX yesterday on UA 932, but our callsign was UA 8191. I think this was because there was a United Express flight to LAX 1 hour before that was cancelled and combined into our flight. How else do you explain 120 pax wanting to go to LAX at 1220 when there are also flights shortly before and after it?

It is used on added segments and when the a/c will be taken out of service post-flight.

It depends a what the second number is.

Flightumbers that start 88XX are extra flights are flown for example when there's bad weather in SFO and they have to cancel a lot of UA Shuttle flights. Then they will fly a 744 as 88XX to get the pax there. There could be other reasons for extra flights. The777Man

Once on a JFK-SFO flight, the Captain announced we would be referred to as 8XXX on ATC (Channel 9) (don't remember specifically the number used) as the previous flight with our number was still airborne and to aviod confusion, ours got assigned and 8000 series number.
