Sibir S7 In Oneworld Negotiations

Apparently, Sibir S7 (formerly Siberia Airlines) is opening negotiations to join Oneworld. Currently they are the biggest domestic airline by passenger volume and fly the IL-86, Tu-154M, 737-400, 737-500, A310-200, A310-300, A319, and will soon receive A320s and 737-800s. Their hub is at Moscow Domodedovo and Novosibirsk Tolmachevo. It would certainly represent a step forward in route network for Oneworld, but the state of many of the second-string airports in Russia is terrible as is their customer service. That being said, many of AA's destinations are horrible as well!

I couldn't imagine AA's destinations being as horrible as some of the destinations served by S7 in Russia.

That being said, I do find oneworld's purported interest in S7 interesting, or perhaps it is only the other way around, with S7 being interested in oneworld, and oneworld (aka British Airways) being indifferent to S7. There are so many more significant places in the world where oneworld lacks a meaningful presence (i.e., China, India, Canada). But then again, oneworld let Royal Jordanian join recently.

How relevant is the state of an airport, when it's the only one available to serve the area? When you need to go there (for the oil, gas or mining industry), you don't really have a choice to like the airport or not  Smile

Wouldn't be as daft as it first sounds really, S7 serves some very isolated and remote areas which when coupled with a business need for people to travel there equates to decent high yielding tranfser pax. I think there would have to be some issues addressed regarding brand commonality and service levels which would be critical if this were to become a reality.

The only market i really see lacking then from OW is China. India is served internationaly and i dont really see the need to actively court a potential suitor for the domestic market which for the most part is just that - domestic, and Canada is sufficiently served already, and besides with AC already tied who else is there that could offer better coverage whilst offering the required service levels?

S7 also has a nice hub operation going at Domodedovo. They're getting new A320s. If this happened, I expect AY would move it's Moscow operations to Domodedovo (IB and BA are already at DME). This would also mean every major alliance has a Russian partner. SkyTeam - Aeroflot, Star Alliance - Transaero, OneWorld - S7.

... and most of Africa. I'm still cheerleading for Ethiopian to be admitted to oneworld. That would be a classy move - good airline, classy network...

What is wrong with that? They're a top notch airline that will only get better once they introduce the 787s. I flew them on two sectors in April and have nothing but astonished praise at how brilliant they were.

Very interesting stuff. It will take a while for it to happen if it does happen though - from announcement to join, it takes around 18 months to two years.



I do quite enjoy a spot of flying - more so when it's not in Economy!

In my experience, S7 has the best customer service of all Russian airlines. S7 is actually the only Russian airline that ever upgraded me to business because economy was overbooked. Aeroflot, on the other hand, once wanted to bump me from the flight when economy was overbooked, even though there were empty seats in business.

Dealing with reservations and service in the air was never an issue with me on my many SU flights and several S7 ones, it was the extremely poor state of the airports and their constituent staff...However, there are many people I know whom had bad experiences with Aeroflot despite their snazzy new PR campaign and phantom SVO-3 terminal...

People always forget that Dragon Air is now part of Oneworld. They are by far the best of the Chinese Airlines and serve all of the main domestic airports within China.
Japan Airlines also has excellent coverage of China.
With both of these superior airlines serving the Chinese market, is there a desperate need to sign up an inferior Chinese Airline?

NRT is served via SVO for the moment, about 3 weekly flights on JL's B772 (in C/Y config). I think that fits right to the demand, and codesharing would be the better option here.

LHR can be reached via BA several times daily. Just add your codeshare out of DME and there you go  Smile

I would expect JL to move to DME as well in the near future, to concentrate here a kind of oneworld hub.

apologies for following Skyhigh off topic


but do KA connect those domestic airports to each other , or just to HKG ? I am unaware of any 'domestic' ops and if you are a business traveller needing to visit several cities in China it is probably not very practical to keep flying back and forth to HKG

KA doesn't have any domestic flights within China.

As far as oneworld, they will be an affiliate member later on this year.

MU is the only other major carrier in mainland China isn't in an alliance. I'm still thing they will join oneworld eventhough SQ has a stake in MU.

My comment was not directed as to the quality of the services provided by RJ. As I have never flown them, I don't think I'm qualified to comment on their service level. My comment was more directed at the coverage area provided by RJ. I was surprised by oneworld's priority in admitting a member covering the Levant region before admitting a member covering China or India.

While Dragonair does cover many of the main domestic airports in China, it does not serve most of China. Your statement would be akin to saying jetblue serves all of the main domesetic airports within the United Statest (it doesn't). While Dragonair is a high-quality Western-like airline, I don't think it will be able to satisfy oneworld's need of a China-based airline which provides a broad range of coverage in China. While Dragonair flies to many of the main cities of China, its service to many of those cities is less than daily, which could be problematic for high-paying elite passengers of oneworld. Additionally, given the Chinese government's political nature, I wouldn't be surprised if oneworld is relegated to a "lower status" in government circles because it does not have a true mainland airline in its membership.

I'm not trying to knock Dragonair--I think it's a brilliant airline. And, by no means am I arguing China Eastern would be a good replacement. A minor technicality--if you consider Dragonair as a "Chinese" airline (as opposed to a Hong Kong airline), then I would argue Cathay Pacific is the best Chinese airline  Smile

There was a thread about a week ago (?) that they were in negotiations. They are already codesharing with BD on the LHR-DME route.
