There was a small, but interesting discussion going on about how the airport "matching funds" / "premium markets" was arrived at:

A carrier offering year-round international service to certain ''premium markets'' can receive up to $50,000 in airport matching funds to promote each new international destination.

Those markets include Cape Town and Johannesburg, South Africa; Addis Ababa, Ethiopia; Nairobi, Kenya; Lagos, Nigeria; Casablanca, Morocco; Brussels, Belgium; Dublin, Ireland; Helsinki, Finland; Moscow; Warsaw, Poland; Budapest, Hungary; Tokyo; Seoul, Korea; Hong Kong; Shanghai; Mumbai and New Delhi, India.

I had speculated that Budapest makes sense as it is home for Malev, a OneWorld member. Helsinki is home to Finnair and Tokyo is JAL.

But, the rest of these, I have no clue. Anyone else have any ideas how these were picked?

MIA is one of the highest yielding gateways to Africa (particularly S.Africa) in the nation... but currently no nonstop service by a global network carrier.

MIA's Asian pax service is also very limited (LY is, IINM, the only carrier offering a nonstop between Miami and any part of Asia).

Mark, or whomever... tell me:
wasn't there talk (or maybe even action) a while back about the powers that be over MIA's Airport Authority were seeking to help KQ purchase a 772ER in exchange for service to MFW?

Various reasons:

CPT/JNB: Miami has the largest South African community in North America
ADD: They would love Ethiopian, which has a great network hub in Africa
NBO: Same as above, with Kenya Airways
LOS: Miami is a large market to Nigeria. It is the third largest travel market between the US and Africa (sometimes fourth, often switching places with HOuston).
BRU: They want AA to fly this rotue.
DUB: They want Aer Lingus, and probably will get them.
HEL: They want Finnair back. Miami has a large Finnish community and Finnair is in oneWorld. Finnair might come back. In fact, the Finnair signs are still up at MIA per Finnair's request. They stopped MIA seasonal flying because they needed the planes for Asian expansion. When that slows down and the planes come, you'll probably see them back.
MOW: Large Russian community
WAW: They would love LOT. LOT almost came before 9.11 happened.
BUD: Malev/oneWorld

Asian destinations: They realize none are realistic aside from NRT and ICN, but might as well offer them. Korean Air has been in talks with MIA lately. They also realize that NBO and ADD aren't happening, but might as well throw it out there.

What makes Poland so interesting for Miami? Is there a large ex-pat community? I have heard about a lot of Polish people in Chicago and New York, but Miami would be new to me.

...so you're implying that the above then was just a rumor?

There are large Eastern European communities throughout South Florida, many of who came to the region during the late 1980s and early 1990s. Russians are still arriving in large numbers today. The largest communities come from Russia, the Ukraine, Hungary, Poland, and Romania. The Polish community here is nothing compared to NYC and Chicago (or Edmonton or Toronto), that's for sure, but it exists.

No, MIA and Kenya Airways were in active discussions that were instigated by MIA. Kenya Airways came to the conclusion that the route was not viable right now.

Aer Lingus. AA has no interest in that market.

MIA was bookable with AA directly from the EI website until MCO came up. I dont see how Aer Lingus could make it viable and AA could not. Would a 757 reach DUB from MIA?

Quote:
This year, MIA also aims to boost passenger traffic by as much as 3.5 percent, partly by attracting new international service from non-traditional markets. Southwell says talks are underway for both Ireland's Aer Lingus and South African Airways to serve Miami.

It seems very strange to me that MIA needs to offer incentives to lure airlines to provide service. One would think that airlines would be wanting to add service there just on the basis of MIA's status as a gateway to Latin America, and also a major hub for AA.

Do other major US int'l airports offer incentives (i.e. JFK, LAX, ORD, etc.)?

The westbound would be pushing it, but it's doable.

Many do, particularly for new entrants and/or new nonstop routes.

No, it is Miami, and I believe Toronto is second.

Yes, many major airports do this. It is the norm, to various degrees of incentives. DEN, DFW, MIA, ATL, FLL. Nowadays, it is almost a requirement. MIA's incentive program is one of the least enticing. They don't cut that much off compared to airports like DFW.

Maybe the entire Miami metro area? (MIA, FLL, PBI)

...don't really have to, as a result of a combo of market and location. Heck, if DFW (cities and airport) was where-- say-- RSW is; then MIA would have to be a hella lot more competitive.

Just ask a South African, especially the many living in Miami. I run into them daily. They fled to Miami in large numbers in during the 1980s, and South African Airways soon followed.
