I agree with you. I don't think there is a need for any more than thjose 3 models.
The 767/777 models will become incorporated into the 787/748 programme as time go by. By continuing the 777 line for example (past say 2012-2014 ish) will surely eat into potential future 748 and 787-9/10 sales.

Long term, Boeing plans on having three families of aircraft, known as Yellowstones 1, 2 and 3. The first Yellowstone family, #2, is the 787. Yellowstone #1 will replace the 737NG family and will almost certainly offer a model capable of doing what the 757 does. Yellowstone #3 will replace the 777 family and the 747-400 passenger model.
However, with Airbus launching the A350 and Boeing launching the 747-8I, Boeing may extend the 787 family greater then planned to replace the 777 family, keep the 747-8I, and push back development of Yellowstone 3.
Through 2015, at least, Boeing will offer:
787 Family, including new members like the 787-10 and 787-8LR
Between 2015 and 2020, Boeing will offer:
Yellowstone 1 to replace the 737
787 Family, including possible new members like the 787-9LR, 787-10ER and 787-11(ER)
Beyond 2020, Boeing will offer.
Yellowstone 3 (possibly not until the mid to late 2020s, if then).

I personally see boeing (and airbus for that matter) doing a sort of 3 1/2 pronged attack with the airbus planes being a smidgen larger in each case. I think we'll see a gigantic twin from boeing for Y3 around the 400 seat market, this will end the 747 and 777, just slightly below where the A380 lies. Then will be the 787 just below the A350 in size and next Y1 and the A32x replacement will be around the A321 and 739 size and upwards through the 752 territory. This is where the half comes in and i think we'll see joint ventures with the RJ comanies to produce an aircraft aorund the 319 size. Thats what i think, bash me all you like.
