Quoting Jlk (Thread starter):
. landing at BOM costs 3 times more than SIN/DXB ???

Thats primarily because the government treats aviation as a LUXURY item hence there are a whole array of taxes for this sector, infact Indian carriers spend over 75% more on ATF costs than other countries

They are charging 30% more for international flights than domestic flights. So, it is the foreign businesses travelers that are paying for cost. It has nothing to do with luxury items.

But as you read in the article even domestic airlines pay a comparitively higher price--I am not justifying the excess charges just pointing out on some possible reasons

For a Boeing B747 jumbo jet, Indian airports charge $3,471 for three-hour turnaround while Singapore airport charges are 40 per cent lower at $2,476. While Dubai airport charges $1,341 to handle a bigger Airbus A340 plane, Indian airports levy $3,282.

'Bigger Airbus A340' in relation to what? Please don't tell me the mean bigger than a 747 because the previous sentence is talking about a 747.

Actually the most pertinent comment here is the one by Jet Airways regarding lower charges coming from greater non-aeronautical opportunities.

easy to say that SIN and DXB are lower, but then they generate a huge amount of commercial revenue thanks to vast retail outlets at those airports. anybody who has been to BOM or DEL know that this isn't a strength of these airports and won't change at least till the airports have been completely rebuilt. Strong commercial revenue can help to offset higher aeronautical charges.

I'm confused a little bit. Since when is Japan not in Asia? AFAIK NRT was the worlds most expensive airport, so it has to be Asia's most expensive as well. Still, far cheaper than YYZ, at least it was 2 years ago.

Actually that's true - completely missed that. Both NRT and KIX have long had far higher charges than HKG.

Also now i look closer the thread title is vey misleading. It refers to HGK as "Asia's most expensive airport" yet only refers to landing charges. This is misleading as their are far more charges that airlines have to pay for than purely landing charges.

Thread title needs to be changed.

Well, not just foreign business travellers but ALL international travelers end up paying for it....

Actuall, what Karan said is true....this mentality has always persisted in Indian politics and administration.....flying is certainly seen as the preserve of the rich and so it has to be taxed....and all the economic boom and the boom in aviation notwithstanding, flying will continue to be viewed as a 'Luxury' by mindless politicians who are only interested in pleasing their vote banks - who mostly consist of the downtrodden sections of society....
