Few Questions About YX, MKE, & TSA

Hi all,

I'm travelling through MKE tomorrow on Midwest (first time in MKE and first on Midwest)...so i'll be in terminal D. Few questions though...

1. Is it easy to spot aircraft from MKE's terminal D? Do they have many windows, or is it similar to ATL (few windows, except on the ends)? Can you see aircraft pretty well, or are they pretty distant (aside from those at the gates)?

2. Does anyone know if the 'Best Care Cuisine' is any good? It's offered on my flight and i'm debating whether to try it...its $10 however. I'd like to know ahead of time if its worth the money or should I just eat at the airport.

Also, as i'm sure we all know, security is much higher since the Glasgow attacks and such, and generally, I like to take my binoculars in my carry on (so I can easily spot aircraft while at the airport). They're 10x binoc's so I can see quite far and up close (fun for spotting). I have a 5 hour layover, so i'd like to take my binocs and watch planes. I'm wondering if its even worth it, because if you can see the planes well enough in MKE, I wont even bother (thereby avoiding a carry on - I will put it all in 1 checked bag, which is a lot easier).

I'm also worried about getting reported by tons of people in that 5 hour span for looking 'slightly suspicious', especially now (versus last month for example). The last thing I want to deal with is getting interrogated for using binoculars at the airport. I'm debating whether to take them or not...I heard on the news they're telling people to report the slightest bit of suspicious activity, and i'm sure looking at planes with binoculars by the airport window in terminal D is considered suspicious by most people  Yeah sure  Yeah sure

I'm mainly concerned about the viewing capabilities in MKE however...if its easy to see planes, even landing, and they're fairly close, then i'll check my Binoculars (and not have a carry on - which'll be nice). If its hard to see planes, they're distant, then I likely will (assuming MKE has plenty of windows/good viewing capabilities).

If anyone could help or answer, that'd be great - thanks!

1.) Yes, hopefully they are using 1L/19R, the runway is right infront of the Terminal, and there are a few good places to view aircraft. It is kindof hard to see final for the runways, the jet bridges get in the way.

2.)Yes, I've had it twice, and well worth the money. It isn't everyday you get a full meal on an aircraft, especially on a domestic flight!

1.) There's plenty of windows at MKE so that should make for some good spotting. Even if 1L/19R isn't being used, you should still get a good view of aircraft departing/landing on 7R/25L. You will also have a pretty good view of concourse C and E. You might wanna take a look at the new hammerhead that's being built over at C.

2.) The Best Care Cuisine is well worth it and you should definetly get it! Its one of the things that makes YX different from other US airlines.

As far as the binoculars go...I don't think it should be a problem. There's not to many TSA guys walking around past security anyways. When I'm at the spotting area at the end of 19R, I always take one of those foldable chair things and stand on it to get a view over the fence to take pics, and I've never had a problem from the cops that stroll through there from time to time. Not sure if that really matters but oh well lol. BTW - What route are you flying?

I'm flying FNT-MKE-LAS & Return (J328 FNT-MKE, then MD-82 MKE-LAS, same aircraft for return). Actually leaving tomorrow (or today / Monday).

It sounds as if MKE will be fine for spotting without the binoculars (i'd actually prefer this because it means I wont be taking a carry on, which will be a lot easier - just 1 checked bag). I'll take my binoculars just will be checking them (i'll use them when i'm at the Luxor...hopefully I can get an east or south-facing high-pyramid room, as last time I was there, you could see the airport and planes [somewhat far, but still could see them]. I'm really curious as to whats so special about the Best Care Cuisine, i'll definitely purchase it though  Wink

Out of curiosity, whats so different about the BCC versus other airlines? I know some airlines have horrible in-flight purchase selections (ie: Northwest's snack box...yick). The menu sounds great though:

I actually got a great bargain for FNT-MKE-LAS & Return back in March or so...$246 with tax. When I seen it was Midwest (whom i've always wanted to try), knew I had to book it, especially at that price.

At lot of firsts on this flight actually...first stop in MKE, first J328 flight, first MD-8X based flight, first Midwest flight...also picked out good seats on the MD-82, row 5 I believe it is...I heard it's whisper-quiet up there, so it'll be interesting to listen to. I've heard great things about YX, so it'll be interesting to see.

I'm also considering coming back from LAS a day or two early to get back to work, in which YX has $25 confirmed standby option (which you get a confirmed seat on a flight, for only $25 if you were not originally booked on that flight, provided seats are available 3hrs before departure), pretty nice.

It's a nice change from flying Northwest, which is what is generally the case when I end up flying out west (LAS or LAX), same with AirTran (fly them a lot out west). Midwest has amped up their schedule and it's really complimentary to my travel needs now...for example, i'll likely be going to LAX in September, and I can now take an evening-arriving flight into LAX (versus their 1x daily schedule, which would come into LAX around 11am, and I couldn't do that). Same with LAS...going to LAS again in November.

I think others have covered most of it.... but a couple of notes: On the MD-80s, the hot buy on board options are not available, so the $10 salad and the $5 option will be offered. Also, service goes from back to front. On the MD-80 flights, you have a very good chance of not being any meals left by the time they get to row 5. If you are set on eating, you'd best get a seat further back. Sometimes they do get all the way to row 1 with food left, but frequently they do not. I try to sit in the row 16-22 area.

A couple more things....

(1) With 5 hours to spot, you'd have plenty of time to leave security and spot from the 6th floor of the parking ramp. Stay on your level in the terminal, take the skywalk over to the partking ramp, and then go up to 6 (the roof). Walk to your left (the southeast corner) and depending on the runway in use, you will have a great perspective.

Security is no problem at MKE...just have your boarding pass and ID to get back in.

(2) LAS is a very full market, so be careful about coming back early and assuming there would be seats. You might want to talk to an agent before checking out of your hotel and spending a lot of extra time at the LAS airport!

(3) You do know you're on Saver to Las Vegas, right? That means 2x3 seating on this flight. Midwest will have their Saver fleet reconfigured this fall with all leather seats -- 2x2 in the first three rows and 2x3 in the rest -- but as of now only 1 or 2 have the new seats. So you're likely to be on an aircraft with all 2-3 cloth seats.

(4) Midwest has onboard digital movie players you can rent for $10 if you'd like.

(5) To echo N822's comments, Saver flights do not have the hot meal choice, and sitting up in row 5 means that they might be sold out of meals by the time they reach you (they go rear to front). They will do the cookies as they do any any flight after 10am.

You aren't going to see an offering like this on any other domestic airline in coach.

D52 gives a nice close view of the intersection of the two main runways and most of our (skyway's) operation.
