They are probably training flights.

US flies SJU-PHL-LGW with the A330, so I guess it's kind of a Euro flight. I'm sure the MIA-PHL flight continues on to Europe. They might be for crew familiarzation with the aircraft i.e. have the newer crews fly short segments like MIA and SJU and have the more experienced crews fly the trans-atlantic flights. That's my guess.

Probably because there is enough time in the schedule to add an additional leg onto a transatlantic segment.
US Airways is also probably training crews and needs
the largest aircraft it has on routes that are popular
during the winter. PHL-MIA and PHL-SJU seems like
a market where demand for seats is strong. Besides,
this is US Airways. They have a lousy product, bad
management, and I would not put it past this airline
to do something stupid.

How is flying these A330's to non-Trans-Atlantic cities stupid? Unless they are flying empty, which I doubt, I see no stupidity in this. DL flies their brand new 767 and 777's from ATL to MCO,TPA,FLL,and MIA. Is that stupid also?

Leave it to ContinentalEWR to chime in about how bad US is, even though he never flies it.

Do you hear that? That's the sound of his axe grinding.
