Republic West Coast Question

I have a few timetables from after the merger to form Republic Airlines. They are buried in storage somewhere, I hope. I do recall that there was service to such places as CEC, LMT, RDD, and RDM. What equipment was used to the smaller areas? Did Huges AirWest fly to the smaller towns?

Most were DC-9s, -10s and -30's... FAT had service to PHX and SMF, including a one-stop to ORD through PHX, on a -30.

My grandmother used to fly Hughes Airwest annually between SFO-RDD-ACV on DC-9-30's. I also believe F-27's were used along the west coast.

Hughes kept much of the West Coast Airlines operation up in the NW, and utilized the 27 for much of the smaller cities. I have a few RC timetables in my closet, and will pull them out later today after I get some sleep.

According to an article in the March/April 2003 issue of "Airliners:"

"(Following the renaming of the company from Air West to Hughes Air West on March 31, 1971) Fleet standardization centered on the F-27, DC-9-10 and DC-9-30, while management continued a campaign to realign the route map. The 727-100s and Navajos were retired soon after the Hughes takeover."

This timetable from July 1, 1972 indicates which flights were operated by jets and which were not:

The article goes on to say:

"The company was flying into 55 airports in 1976, 48 with all-jet service, and had numerous route applications on file. The F-27 fleet numbered only six and would soon disappear; 24 had been disposed of in in the previous five years, all at a profit. The remaining turboprops served airports unable to accommodate jets; 19 small towns had been dropped from the system by then, with those remaining targeted for elimination from the route map, to be taken over by commuter airlines."

It appears, in the November 1979 OAG, Hughes Airwest's F-27 routes were operated with 4000-series flight numbers.

4531 CEC-AVC
4532 AVC-CEC
4533 CEC-AVC

If, as the article states, the six remaining F-27s would "soon disappear," then it would seem by the final days of Hughes Airwest, they would have been gone.

If that's the case, then the airline would have only been operating 727-200s, DC-9-10s, and DC-9-30s in its final timetable:

I know for a while after the Hughes Airwest/Republic merger, Republic retained their flights between OAK-PHX with DC-9-30's and DC-9-10's, as well as their OAK-RNO-SLC-MSP flight in the mornings with DC-9-30 equipement before they dropped OAK completely.

They were fun to watch since they thrusted back all the time. Never got to fly on them, though. Bummer.

Like he said, the F27s (or FH227s or whatever they were) were all gone by 1980 or so.

Hughes Airwest flew F-27s into Stockton to SFO. They also flew the DC-9s on the SMF-SCK-LAS route. Hughs pulled out before the republic purchase.

Coincidentally, West Coast's first Fairchild F-27 (license-built) which went into service in September 1958 was the first F-27 in airline service anywhere in the world, even before the first Fokker-built F-27 went into service with Aer Lingus. Photo of that first West Coast F-27 below. It was sold in 1972. West Coast, Pacific and Bonanza merged in 1968 to form Air West, which became Hughes Airwest in 1970.

RW's timetable for 29 April 1979 says OTH and CEC will be discontinued after 31 May, and GTF and CIC will be discontinued after 30 June.

Looks like one RW F27 flight in the 3/80 OAG-- lv ACV 1130, arr SFO 1245, lv there 1540 to return to ACV. What's the point of sitting in SFO for three hours? Wonder if that really existed-- I don't remember it.

This seems to have happened a number of times. AA destroyed AirCal and US Air destroyed PSA. These were great and colorful West Coast Airlines.

It would have been interesting to see how Hughes AirWest would have done in the post-regulation era. Cities like Stockton have always had difficulties keeping air service. High fares, poor flight times and the carriers' lack of attention have doomed consistent service. I am happy to see Alegiant making a go of it.

Well said... There were so many carriers that have tried....Pacific Express, being one of those who could have made it except for United deciding to re-enter markets simply to knock them out of the sky. The secondary markets in the West really deserve better. Alas, the growth of SMF and OAK pretty much have doomed Stockton except for something very much a niche market, such as Allegiant. I will say, it's been interesting to be driving down Highway 99 and seeing the Virgin America 320's parked on the ramp....

Hughes Airwest will always be memorable for one radio ad....where the guy walks up to the counter a couple hours after his flight was scheduled only to learn the flight had actually left on-time. To say that the pre-Hughes days were marked by late and/or cancelled flights would be an understatement. Oh, the stories I could tell.....

Thanks for the link there N702ML. I have checked out that website before but not that specific Hughes Airwest schedule. Check out ACV..... nonstop Yellow Banana service to CEC, EUG, LAX, MFR and SFO.... 5 jets a day.... two daily 3 stops same plane jet flights to TUS...... one daily 2 stop same plane jet service to LAS.... one daily 1 hour and 20 minute jet flight to LAX plus another 2 stop jet leaving ACV two hours before that...... Man this is killing me.

I wonder what airfares were like on these flights? Look at PSA in the 1970's..... They had some incredible airfares between the Bay Area and LA but then you better add over 30 years of inflation to those prices. But still. What was it $10 to $30 one way between SFO and LAX? I think the one thing you have to remember is back then, working for an airline like Hughes Airwest or PSA was like working for a giant family. There are still employee reunions for old employees. I know PSA employees still get together every so often. Now working for an airline is like working for a dysfunctional family where the parents divorced the kids, sent them off to military school and spent their inheritance on a new RV that they totaled in an accident two years later with no insurance.

I wish I lived here in ACV back in the days of jet service. Besides Republic and Hughes Airwest flying jets up here, UA flew 737's into ACV around 1984. That was around the time they were flying to All 50 States. Now all we have are UAX EMB-120's and QX Q400's. UA did fly up to 3 CRJ's a day into ACV from SFO but that ended during B/K reorganization 2-3 years ago. I did get a couple of chances to fly the early evening CRJ up here from SFO. We usually made it here in less than 50 minutes. It was fast enough that the FA only passed out water, no beverage service. If DL is flying CRJ's into RDM and SLE why not ACV??



I'm leavin on a jet plane. Don't know when I'll be back again....

Hughes Airwest was definetely a family. My dad was a part of that family from 1974 to 1986 when Republic went from 70 flights a day in LAS to 7. The reason that AS has been able to stay alive is that, along with Horizon, they have filled a lot of the holes that were left by the demise of PSA, AirCal, Hughes Airwest and on a smaller scale Reno Air. There is a reason that WN became the largest inter-California airline, someone gave them the chance. The west coast has always been a region that embraced regional airlines and now it is AS and WN. While WN is not a regional airline they do fly many point to point routes which is what the west coast wants.

Interesting Hughes Airwest trivia:

The "year" was 1976 and Ronald Reagan was ready for his first run at becoming the President of the United States of America. The job would be no easy task as he would have to take on the incumbent, President Gerald Ford for the nomination of the Republican Party. As fate would have it, Reagan lost the nomination at the party's convention in Kansas City that August by the narrowest of margins. Ford then ran against Jimmy Carter that fall for the Presidency and lost. Reagan finally achieved his goal four years later in 1980 and the rest, as they say, is history.

Hughes Airwest played a major part in Reagan's attempt to unseat Gerald Ford. The "Committee to Elect Ronald Reagan" was headed by long time Reagan friend, Michael Deaver. It was Deaver who first contacted Hughes Airwest after becoming unhappy with their previous carrier. The first Reagan charter flight was on April 9, 1976 from Los Angeles to Cheyenne, Wyoming. During the next three months, Hughes Airwest DC9's would carry the former Governor of California over 50,000 miles with visits to 19 states and 62 cities.

We're not sure just where the "Command Center" is aboard "Air Force One" but in 1976 aboard "RW One," Gov. Reagan always took seat 1E. When "First Lady" Nancy Reagan was on board, seat 1D and 1E were occupied, otherwise they were available for interviews with on board members of the press or conferences with members of Reagan's travelling staff.

I worked for RW the whole time from Pacific and AirWest to Republic. My wife came to work for them in 1977 and still gets a lump in her throat when we hear the theme song on hughesairwest.com We love to remember them as "the good old days" but that was because of the growing up in a family feeling. Actually some of the hard times were horrendous to get through with the smaller resources of the regionals but you grew with it. Now things are just too big to grasp. Starting with about 30 cities in three states (20 of which barely get service if any now) to a world-wide company where you have no earthly idea who is at the other end of the phone makes you pretty homesick. At RW you could salute a Captain off the pad for his three hour trip and he probably would make your pool party that evening with most of the F/As. Now he hasn't a clue or care nor do you. Then the Station Manager would set you up with his daughter because he thought you had a future. Now they call us ramp rats and can't be seen socially with us. Size is great ain't it?

 checkmark   checkmark  A friend of mine that works outside the airline industry was complaining about his bosses,after he described them, I told him they would be considered decent at an airline,it is amazing the weenies that run things now. You guys are right RC let a good thing die when the reduced the RW system...BTW M404 did you know anyone that worked at IDA??
