Are Delays In Europe As Bad?

Are flight delays and CNX's as bad in Europe as bad as they are in the United States? MSNBC reported that Flicht CNX's are up 130%.

The pattern varies greatly across Europe.

Severe weather is rather rare, so that source of flight cancellation is less of a problem in Europe, except on very rare days with winter snow storms. However, industrial action by airlines (AZ especially) ATC (France regularly) or airport staff is somewhat more of a problem in Europe. Rarely a year goes by without some of these problems, which can affect traffic crossing through French airspace for example as much as local traffic. However, pressure on airports and on air space in Europe makes delay very common at LHR especially. Most British airports have inadequate security staff to operate their present proceedures, so that flights are delayed due to crew and passengers being stuck in security lines. Dublin, for example has inadequate ground movement capability in the terminal area, leading to knock on delays caused from early morning departures running late. Some European low cost operators resort to cancellation as a near first option if they run into any difficulties due to weather, airport conditions or availability.

What doesn't exist in Europe compared to US (or at least to the same extent) is the bad US practice to let a plane full of pax leave a gate and stays during hours on the tarmac before take-off (or cancellation), just to leave your gate to another arriving aircraft. In Europe, the 1st plane will not leave the gate if it's not supposed to take-off soon for whatever reason (weather, air congestion, etc) and the other arriving A/C will be parked somewhere else (another gate or a "remote" location and pax disembarked with stairs & buses).

Not quite that simple, many of Europe's airports are slot restricted. If you add on half an hour to your filed flight time, you'd better be carrying holding fuel. I agree with you that some schedules look generous but they have to strike a fine balance into busy airports.

The flight time from Zürich to Milan used to be 30 min. Now it's 1 hr. The acutal flight time is around 20 min.
London to Milan used to be 2 hours and now it says 2:30. Most flight take no longer than 1:30.

Yes, allowing for 20-30 min taxi at LHR and 15 on the other end and dependant on time of day, a small amount of holding at MXP.
