Just received this letter from a close friend who has been working for VARIG in Buenos Aires for several years.

The Translation (and sorry for the mistakes but I wanted to post this as quick as possible)

Buenos Aires, July 23rd ,2007

Dear Journalists and General Public.

By this email we want to make public the following information:

The company VARIG S.A. (better known as VARIG) has informed to its employees (104 in total) of Buenos Aires that between Tuesday and Wednesday (24 and 25/7) they will be sending dismissal telegrams to all of them, without paying the indemnifications that the Argentine law contemplates. Its good to add that VRG (the new VARIG) continuing of VARIG S.A., as established by the Work Ministry and the Transport Secretary of Argentina, does not count with the rating the Argentine government requires to operate in the country, thus they can neither fly nor contract personnel.

Behind VRG there is its new owner GOL, who has been giving out these orders and does not seem to care that VARIG ceases its operations, showing not only the little respect towards the passengers but also the scorn that as a foreign company they have towards the Argentine laws. It is obvious by these facts that, during this week, VARIG will cease all operations in Argentina.

We ask: Isn´t the Argentine government planning to do something to safeguard its citizen rights? Can any foreign company come and do whatever they want?

You can check this information through the Ministry of Work (file Nº 1.225.942/07), the Secretaria de Transporte Aerocomercial and with VARIG

Definitely Sad news.

Regards

E

Quoting Estick (Thread starter):
VARIG S.A. (better known as VARIG)

That's old Varig, the company that inherited the debt and is supposed to start operating as soon as hell freezes over.

The rest of the article seems to be rather typical of the "friendly" relationship between Brazil and Argentina. That notwithstanding, I dread the way the "new Varig" inerited mst of the assets of "old Varig" and none of the debt... "banana republic" is a fitting term. As far as I and probably many others are concerned, the name will be tarnished for a very long time - and that definitely is in the article.

Varig employing 104 employees in Buenos Aires? Wow, no wonder they went under!

I suspect any "new" Varig operation or Gol for that matters would smartly use contract handling staff minimizing the need to self hire to bare minimums.

Reminds me of the main reason United pulled out of Auckland New Zealand. They had a staff of 70+ folks simply to cover 1 flight. Certainly not an efficient nor profitable way to run a operation.
