Beddoe Yields WestJet CEO Role To President Sean Durfy

WestJet CEO Clive Beddoe became the latest founder of a low-cost carrier to relinquish daily duties and assume a more behind-the-scenes function in crafting broad company strategy.

Beddoe plans to cede his CEO title to WestJet President Sean Durfy Sept. 4, almost a year after naming Durfy president. At that time, Beddoe stressed the importance of bringing in a "younger team of executives to drive the company forward."

The latest changeover follows the departure of the bulk of WestJet's founding executives, including former CFO Sandy Campbell, who left last year, and VP-Operations Tim Morgan, who stepped down in 2005 for personal reasons.

For his part, Beddoe believes his new role of executive chairman "more accurately reflects the role I have been progressively fulfilling for the past eight months, as I have handed more responsibility over to Sean Durfy and our executive team."
