Coach To Business Upgrade On AA: Lucky Aberration?

Hi Folks! I finally took the time to register as a member on Anet.

Yesterday, I took a couple of flights with American: AA 1231 from MSP-DFW, and AA 408 from DFW-MIA (operated by a 772; a specifically chosen flight, obviously!). As I went through the electronic check-in at MSP, I was given the option to change seats on the DFW-MIA leg. I was seated in 26A and saw an opportunity to move to another window seat further ahead, 10J. I received my tickets without a problem and made it to Dallas without a hitch.

However, once I boarded the 777 to Miami, I quickly realized (with some glee) that I had been issued a business class seat when I selected 10J. Undoubtedly, the moral of the story is to always select a domestic flight on a widebody whenever possible... it's always a good thing  Wink.

My question is, was there an electronic glitch with the e-ticket counter that resulted in a free upgrade? Or does American leave some of these seats open at the last minute? I'm intrigued, as I might be more inclined to check in with a computer from here on out. Thanks for the help!

No, on domestic flights, AA sells their 3-class 777s as 2, with the J seats available for prebooking only for AAdvantage Gold, Platinum, and Exec Platinum, however day of departure, if any seats are unbooked, they're opened to the rest of the plane. You got lucky, as most Elite flyers know where the 777s are, and will try to get on them if possible. Nice find! I wouldn't count on it happening again, but you never know!

In a word, NO. AA sells the business seats on the 3 class 777, as coach, as explained very clearly by Longhornmaniac above.

This is a nice perk about flying AA's domestic 772 routes, as well as the MIA-JFK 762 route. The one domestic route this doesn't apply to is MIA-LAX 772 flight. That route is sold as three-class.

The 763s are 2-class, so J is sold as F.

AA has a handful of domestic 3-class routes. On flights between Miami and Los Angeles; New York City and Los Angeles; and New York City and San Francisco, these flights are sold as 3-class.

On flights between Miami and Dallas; Miami and Chicago; Miami and New York City; and Chicago and Dallas, 3-class flights are sold as 2-class, so as a coach passenger, you might get lucky enough to end up in a J seat. Though the reality is that elite flyers and full-fare Y passengers snap these up 99% of the time, before a regular joe gets the seats. It does happen, though. The seats are J, but the service is Y.

The answer to your question is that the seats in front would go into the "gate lottery" for upgrades. If not enough DL Medallions registered for upgrades (unlikely, but does happen on rare occasions) then the domestic upgrades are available for sale for a small fee ($50-$100 or so) to any willing pax.
