DL SAN-LAX-ATL Problem

Now that DL has started SAN-Lax flights i decided it would be easy for me to get to lax to take the 777 flight to ATL, but when i try to book it first of all it doesn't show up and when i try multi city it still won't work. I called DL and the 3 people i talked to were not interested in helping me (just a one time occurance i usually have very nice people from DL) so what can i do? Does anyone know how to make this work

I went to Delta's website directly...Chose the Multi City Option and had no problem selecting the 777 on the LAX- ATL Leg

They used to have awesome people working for them. Usually very sweet people from the south. Now you get John from India who has no idea how to do anything but a simple reservation that usually takes an hr to make and usually is messed up some how. I've had so many problems with the res agents from DL and UA who are in India.

DL has flown to LAX for a long time. This was via AA Eagle. I used to have some problems trying to book those flights. The only thing I can say is try again using multi seg search or search by schedule. I used to do double connects all the time when DL had the L10s. Good luck. Hopefully you can do it on the web otherwise, you really need luck

Delta's website allows you to book the fare, but it is priced as SAN-LAX plus LAX-ATL; if you simply search SAN-LAX, you won't get it. This is probably why Delta's agents weren't helpful to you - they weren't breaking the fare into SAN-LAX/LAX-ATL; since you asked for SAN-ATL, they can only see the non-stop flights; you would have to ask deliberately for a SAN-LAX flight, then a LAX-SAN flight as two different segments (in a sense, the trip would be an open jaw SAN-LAX-ATL). Reason Delta does this is for revenue protection; why pay a Connection carrier money to carry you on a SAN-LAX flight and then still have to move you across the country when they can keep all the money to themselves and lower their costs by only transporting you on one flight? Makes financial sense for Delta big-time.

I guess we are lucky here in Mexico then. The DL call center for Latin America (excluding Brazil) is in Santiago, Chile, and, for the most part, the telephone agents are very, very nice girls and guys who take care of callers in a very good way.



Next flights: MEX-GRU (AM 77E), GRU-GIG (JJ A320), SDU-CGH (G3 73H), GRU-MEX (JJ A332).

I has same issues as you are having. If I want to go to STL on WN from IND. I can't make connection thru MDW, I will need to purchase two tickets one for IND-MDW-IND and another for MDW-STL-MDW. WN used to fly n/s from IND-STL but it was disconnected due to not enough loads for that route. I think it is silly if some people has to buy two tickets to get to where they want to go without proper connection. I think it would be nice if all of airlines allow connection even it not make any sense of where people want to with connection in some cities.

That might be the case for WN here, but in this case, Delta has 7 daily SAN-ATL flights; there's a flight every 2 hours during the day, plus a red-eye flight at night. That's very good frequency, and beats the pants out of any connection through SLC, LAX or CVG that Delta could possibly offer on this route. Why should Delta let someone take a connection when there are plenty of perfectly available non-stops (a flight every two hours on a trans-con route that is not NYC-LAX/SFO is more than sufficient in terms of frequency) when, if said passenger takes a connection, it will cost Delta a good bit more money (I believe the LAX-SAN route is an at-risk ExpressJet route, so DL gives XJet the fare for the LAX-SAN portion, costing them money, and then they still have the trans-con left to fly). It's a sound business decision by Delta here to pretty much force people onto the non-stop SAN-ATL flight than go through a hub. These airlines aren't in business to let plane enthusiasts get more flights just so they can fly on a certain plane - they're in business to make money for the shareholders.

I did not realized that SAN -ATL has 7 daily flights. Then DL767captian would has to deal with n/s on SAN-ATL rather than deal with problem with try to make connect throu LAX or whatever he wants to connection.

If you live in Carlsbad it would probably be cheaper to get a shuttle service for the 1 1/2 hour drive to LAX and then purchase the air fare for LAX-ATL on the 777. But dont forget to take into consideration that this flight has a good chance of an equipment sub and you may get another type of twin engine jet instead. Good luck.

dont get me wrong i love that DL has 7 daily nonstop flights but i just really want to fly on a 777 again, i flew on a brand new united that brought us back from OGG to DEN and it was awesome cuz we got upgraded for free! but i do wish DL would send some 777's or 767-400 to SAN because every flight i have been on has be packed full (757 and 767) and seeing as how it is one of their most profitable routes they could probably use the extra capacity.

I guess the airlines don't put too much emphasis on a quality reservations staff since the telephone really isn't the primary way to buy tickets anymore. With Internet-based reservations, check-in, etc, you really never need to interact with human beings anymore when travelling. This is a great thing for a corporations' bottom line, a terrible thing for the front-line employees who have lost their jobs to computers, and a rather impersonal thing for customers. From an economic efficiency point of view, it's still a good thing because computers are more efficient than people and the overall cost from the consumer's standpoint is less. But as a consequence, customers don't enjoy a level of personal service they once did.

Those aircraft are not exactly readily available for reassignment by DL. I would expect them to increase frequency and capacity on SLC, CVG, and JFK first, probably by making those flights all 757.

It also should be remembered that DL now has competition on the route - triple daily AirTran "seasonal" service that appears to be operating year-round!  Wink DL, so far at least, has not done anything different with their prized route since FL started sharing the revenue in May and I do hope their loads continue to be profitably high. A bigger plane (or added frequency) would be wonderful but I wouldn't hold my breath!

I agree completely with you, DeltA', and your very well delivered explanation of the routing restrictions of SAN-ATL. I used to spend lots of time explaining the same situation to clients for years and years, on many cx. Delta has had a long and complex history of these confusing routing restrictions, especially involving the SAN-LAX corridor. They have run the route in many different ways over the years (mainline, DLConnection, code-share) and the rules keep changing. There was a time when I tried to use SkyMiles to fly SAN-HNL (after the n/s was gone) but couldn't use miles to fly SD-LA -- I think it was Connection at the time -- and they wanted me to make the trip on mainline metal via SLC. I ended up renting an Avis o.w. from SD to LA for $35 and boarding in LA on a mileage ticket to HNL! (BTW, you might consider checking out that option to solve your problem, DL767captain.)

I've wondered how they are doing with the JFK n/s. I had half expected by now to see at least an announcement of a 2nd frequency on that route -- either an early afternoon SAN departure or a red-eye -- to supplement the primo early morning departure (where they compete with AA but not B6.) My gut feeling is that the new red-and-white kid on the block, once they start serving Lindbergh, may very well jump into that market as well, just as they have not only out of SF but also from LA.
