I think it was made to compete with the DC-10 and the L-1011

It was made to fly longer routes. I have read and re-read the story in Airliners Magazine. I think I remember reading that one flew a delivery flight from Seattle to Johannesburg. That may have been a -400 but I do recall it was a very long flight.

It was made to fly longer ranges, which was done by making it much lighter...

A South African 747SP did indeed fly SEA-JNB, a distance of 8912nm, with 50 passengers aboard. This was a record for commerical aircraft till a Qantas 747-400 flew LHR-SYD, a distance of 9167nm. Both were delivery flights.

Hi!~!~!

The logic of creating this plane was to make it travel longer distance. Just like the concorde, it has lesser seats than a normal plane and it travels further than a normal plane.

Just a small correction:

It wasnt PanAm but Qantas which made the original request for the 747SP.

An other small correction:

The SAA B747SP flew to Cape Town (CPT) not to Johannesburg (JNB).

Panam was the airline that made the request to Boeing for the 747SP. The aircraft was announced in August of 1973 and was soon followed by an order from Panam for 10. It first flew July 4, 1975.
