Merhabalar,
I hope everyone is having a great summer, since not much more left of it. It seems to be very busy for most of you.
Again I will put down a list of things happening and we will go from there;

-TK starts ESB-LHR daily with 321
-Onur wet leases a MD-82 from Best Airlines
-Eurowings will lease 2 ex-Atlas CRJ700s
-Condor starts 3x weekly FRA-SAW
-Euro Atlantic Airways will lease a second ex-Atlas 757
-Sun Express leased an ex-XL Airways 738.
-Futura Int. Airways has added an ex-Pegasus 738
-Saga has wet-leased both of its 734s to Air Algerie
-MNG wet leased a A300C4 to Ceiba Int.

Now, there is some crazy news above (from CH Aviation); Pegasus gets brand new 738s and at the same time sends them away, TK leases 738 from Sunexpress, and Sunexpress get them from XL, Atlas is leasing its nicer aircraft to lease a weird combination for themselves, just doesn't make sense.

-How about the news of Onur being taken over by Pegasus, and creating a formidable challenge to TK?
-How is Star Alliance coming along?
-Sept. is only a month away, can we finally get an order from TK for 787/777/350?

And how about this looming TK strike, it is getting pretty ugly.

Again, your inputs are greatly appreciated, nice to have you all here.

Let's hope there won't be any TK strike. When we read the comments of the TK's employees regarding the strike, most of them will vote for 'NO' .

On my last 2 TK flights, luckily I have flown on new A320s. The interior colour is good (blue seats, pink curtains), at least much better than the pictures I saw on the database. The only problem was, the blue colour shows dirtyness.

How about the load of ESB-LHR flights?

How about the load of ESB-LHR flights?

This is a quote from last months thread from Ankaraflyjet;
"Turkish Airlines starts daily nonstop flights from Ankara Esenboga to London Heathrow from October 28. The daily flights are as follows:

Turkish Airlines LHR Terminal 3 to ESB
Turkish Airlines TK1986
Departs: 13:15
Arrives: 19:15
Duration: 4 hrs 00 min

Ankara Esenboga Airport (ESB) - Heathrow Airport (LHR) T3
Turkish Airlines TK1985
Departs: 10:00
Arrives: 12:15
Duration: 4 hrs 15 min "

About the blue seats, yes they show especially the pen marks, but that is the case with almost any airline with leather seats, but you are right, this light blue color needs more tender love and care than others.

Atlas is leasing its nicer aircraft to lease a weird combination for themselves, just doesn't make sense.

What exactly went wrong with AtlasJet? Did ETS Group screw it up after taking it over the OGER Group? They seem to be having a lot of problems in the last few years... I flew them 4 times now and all their flights were full. AtlasJet offers a great product and their domestic flights are extremely popular. Bad management perhaps? Or maybe their strategy of flying to airports TK isn't interested (Usak, Canakkale, Tokat etc) didn't work?

Quoting TK787 (Thread starter):
And how about this looming TK strike, it is getting pretty ugly.

Not a TK strike but back in 2000 when I was still a cabin crew with TK, the ATC had a strike and boy was that ugly? A 45 minute ADB-IST flight wouldn't land before 1h10 mins or so.I vaguely remember a BA plane that had to convert to Bulgaria somewhere.

Quoting TK787 (Thread starter):

In my opinion, TK will go for the A 350 XWB. The 340s will still be used with the upgraded interiors until they arrive sometime around 2015 and then they will be phased out as the 350s arrive. And I assume some of the 350s (or all) will be in high density configuration for flights to JFK, NRT, BKK and such.

I know that TK has been wanting to start MEL or/and SYD flights for quite some time so maybe a couple of longer range 350s could be bought to introduce non-stop flights. I guess one of the 350 variants has enough range to cover the distance right?

Both MEL and SYD are just under 15,000km from IST. All 350 variants have a range just about that, but when we factor in the prevailing winds and others, I just don't see this as a non-stop, but one day as a one stop. By the way this would be a very very long non-stop flight, over 18 hours (?), so I don't see it happening.

The order is a tough call, also I tend to think like you.

1) TK won't order the B777, it's too late when the A350 is just knocking at your door.
2) Turkey is politically not in particular good terms with Europe, so IMO the political pressure to order Airbus won't be here and the B787 is a very good aircraft.
3) The B783 (or even an underused B788) would be a good replacement for the A310 for medium haul to Europe/ME/India. But it arrives too late and TK is already learning to deal with what is available on the market i.e. more A321s, sometimes some A330/A340 and a growing cargo entity that takes the freight.
4) The A340s being refurbished cost TK some good money so they will stay for some more time for the retrofit program to make good ROI. I think TurkishWings' 2015 guess is a good one. They also get A330s and could order more of them until that time frame should they need extra capacity. So 2015 is IMO about right for the beginning of the new WB aircraft deliveries. It puts Airbus and Boeing on the same level as both the B787 and the A350 are available in 2015.
5) The A350 is built to hold more pax than the B787 and TK will need bigger aircraft eventually (I could easily see a 350 pax aircraft in TK fleet in the future).

So my take would be about an A350 order by TK.
Point #5 being the biggest factor. TK will need a 350 seater and the A350 looks (as of today) to be more appropriate for this job. The A350 will allow them to have only one aircraft type for :

  • growing markets (A350-1000),
  • the A340 replacement (A350-900),
  • and the A330 replacement down the road (A350-800).

Quoting TK787 (Reply 4):

I think the A350-900R could do it. IST-SYD is longer than IST-MEL at 8,076nm (great circle) and the A359R is said to have a range of 9,400nm, enough to make it, even taking into account the winds westward.

TC-AAK was offered by RBS on a better lease term than what they already had on the bird that they returned. PGT is the most bottom line conscious aviation company in Turkey. So, the better leasing rate is a good reason to change and get a brand new one in the fleet.

PGT also loves the 737-500s. They run really nice on thin routes w/out pushing the issues of another aircraft type and different crew requirement.

Quoting TurkishWings (Reply 3):
What exactly went wrong with AtlasJet?

They used this 'we are getting 'zero' airplanes out of the factory ' spiel too much. They never watched their bottom line and they started to operate too many different types of airplanes. They had two different variants of 757s and 3 different kind of A320s. Why would you want to have 757 with both GE and RR engines on your fleet?

There were also a lot of issues with non aviation related cost structures. Now that petro dollars are saving them, will they get their act together? We'll see..

An lastly for something completely stupid , THY extended the leases on some 734s. Leasing them from 1993 till 2009..

If you go to RE: 2 More A319s From AtlasJet To Turkish Airlines (by Robcol99 Sep 25 2006 in Civil Aviation) Wing and I had comprehensive analyses on what could go wrong with Atlas. This was September last year, if I'm not mistaken. Sad to see that our projections are somewhat materializing.

For your info, I think they plan to extend the lease on 6 aircraft for 5 more years, starting from 2008/9. So they'll be around for a good old 20 yrs!
But again, their leasing rates are really low now.

I'm not sure about the point-to-point demand between the capitals, but what I could think of is a big amount of connecting traffic over the pond. LHR and especially BA serves a lot of destinations in Northern America. For ESB pax an alternative to TK with only ORD and JFK via IST or LH with some US destinations via MUC.

I don't understand this. What is the urgency? These 6 734s are leased for another 2 years, why rush now to extend their lease till all the way to 2014? This must be a very sweet deal, or is there a lack of 15 year old 734s in the market?
Also by 2009 there will be 12 more A320s, 5 more A321s, 8 more 738s in the TK fleet. Just don't get it.

The 737-400 has turned out to be a quite successful work horse at THY. I remember back in 1988-89 when then CEO Cem Kozlu started looking at the type as replacement for the 727 and DC-9 fleets.

While the current lease rates are quite favorable, the crazy part however is that THY all these years probably paid twice the original purchase price via operating lease charges when all said and done. Not the best business decision looking back.  banghead

Cleverly at least, they did not take the same path on majority of the 738 and A32X fleets, with most being purchased directly instead.

my intention is to spend my two week vacation mid August in Turkey and I'm flying on stand-by  Wink no problem with my outbound flight... my problem (and 'headache-maker') is the return back to Germany. Actually the BMI flights are inherited from BMED but still there will be BA codeshare in the BMI flights. Therefore the BMI flight will more likely carry more One World pax than Star to and from Ankara. The BA codeshare will help fill the North America connections too. Secondly BMED operated Ankara as a first leg of a flight to Khartoum or Tbilisi or Aleppo or Damascus. If BMI will do that (most likely) the number of seats allocated for Ankara is limited with BMI. We will have to see BMI timetable to comment on this. I am even expecting BA to involve into Ankara and exit the deal with BMI eventually due to Ankara's growing feed to One World.

Regarding the TK daily between ESB-LHR, it seems to be a wrong decision to start this in the winter schedule, they should have done this in the summer. Also TK should use this flight for transit to other Turkish or international destinations from Ankara as IST is congested, crowded and is not an ideal transit point. ESB is the best facility in Turkey for smooth transit all under the same roof (from/to INT to DOM vice versa)

ESB still, as the airport with the second largest scheduled airline traffic in Turkey, is not served by any member of SKYTEAM and this needs to be sorted out by AF, KL or DL.
