The aircraft is parked at the Mercury Air terminal on the opposite side of the airport terminals. It is too far to see the reg, and I think it is some kind of charter service, it is being serviced by SkyChefs's.

I noticed that aircraft as long ago as the 2nd, when I flew ONT-PHX on US. As we took off, I saw what looked like an NW DC-10 and realized it was an ATA example.

How many DC-10s are in ATA service right now? Because I've seen N701TZ in NW silver colors at JFK, so I'm wondering if I've already seen the active fleet already?  Smile

Two DC10s in-service now with the 3rd N705TZ about the middle of Sep. and the 4th N706TZ about the middle of Oct.

I saw this one, or one identical to it, at DFW this morning (Aug. 6). I believe it was parked at Terminal E when I arrived, then I saw it taxing north on the east side of the airport around 10:30. It's kind of hard for me to pin down exact locations at DFW when I'm on a shuttle bus doing a loop coming in to Terminal C. It seemed a little strange with the NW color scheme and the ATA logo on it.

There was also a white ATA L-1011 at DFW Saturday. I think I saw it, or a similar one, when I got to DFW this morning. I couldn't see it well enough to figure out where it was.

That was the same one that left ONT (N702TZ). I saw her arrive at DFW (or the Delta Logistics building anyway) around 2 or 3 in the morning. There's usually 1 or 2 L-1011s over there at any given time, and now the occasional DC-10. Like someone else said, there are just 2 in service, 701 is silver and 702 is the older bowling-shoe NW livery. As of 6:00 this morning there was still one L-10 at DL Log and N164AT was at E-32 IIRC. Wish I was wearing earplugs when it taxied in next to me (at E-34) at 4:00. 10 times as loud as any 73 or A3xx. Hopefully we'll have a nice large 3-holer crowd here by next year.

I said it and the bowling shoe will eventually be replaced with an overall gray scheme similar to 701.

Should be as the TZ widebody base is DFW and by next year we wil have 3 L-1011s and 4 DC10s.

I thought they had 4 L-1011s in service. Which one was/is being dropped? I haven't seen 161 in a while, must be her. When are the others scheduled to go? Also, what is the breakdown of NW DC-10 acquisitions? Your post said 4 active, so how many for parts, how many to Omni or World?

Well...161 is the one that hasn't been D-checked. So it's logical that that will be the first to go.

Yup, both right. 161 was retired in June to ROW and is in the process of being picked apart for the other three ladies. 162 will go next in the 1st qtr 2008 with 163 and 164 going through C checks and will stick around through 2008.

ATA signed leases for 9 ex-NWA DC10s and the original plan was to operate 7. With the World acquisition, World losing 3 pax MD11s in 3/08, and their better AMC allocations have changed the plan. World will now get 3 of the 9 DC10s and ATA will operate 4 this year. The remaining two are "spares" with the potential of adding them to the ATA fleet in 2008 if the business need allows it. ATA's optimal widebody fleet plan is 6 aircraft total.

First DC-10 of NW was here while back to be fitted into full ATA color and etc. I saw it went thru few training here at IND to get use with moving around at IND. It would be great to see more of DC-10 ATA at IND. But not sure if all of ATA widebody will be moving to another place.

So would I man, but unfortunately there will no longer by any ATA aircraft in IND. The line station is closed and the hangar will be vacated by Nov. 1. All that will be left is HQ and our warehouse.

Where will you, and the rest of engineering, be based?

We'll still be here in IND as we consolidated about a year and a half ago from the hangar (building 4) to the 3 HQ buildings nearby. Because of the World acquisition, I see some consolidation of non-operations functions to ATL next year, but not M&E as we're tied to the TZ certificate which is based here and all three airlines will remain separate operations. However, upper management could decide that we all should be in ATL, so who knows for sure. I expect some news by the end of the year after the deal closes this quarter.

I hope you have more room now, the office in the hanger was tighter than your seat pitch.

Actually less room. The old hangar offices were tight, but then Building 4 was built (attached to the hangar) which was very spacious and well laid out. However, bankruptcy saw us relinquish Building 4's lease and now we're across the railroad tracks in Building 3.

Just saw N702TZ again last night at DFW E-33. Looks a bit fugly with the clean square with the ATA logo inside it, the old NW logo area w/KLM alliance circle etc. faded, and white stripe on the tail. Anyone know when exactly she's up for repaint? Also, should 701 be overnighting in DFW any time soon? I'd love to see that great silver scheme. I almost prefer it to ATA's current livery, especially those blank L-10s.

There are no confirmed plans for 702, 705, and 706 to be repainted at this time. However, it is being arranged as widebody paint slots in the US are very scarce so it will happen, just don't know when yet. 701 should be seen in DFW in September after the Adriatic Eagle program ends out of JFK.
