With the news out of St Louis today it
sounds like TWA employess are finally feed
up with the fat old men (women too) in the
front office and want a major change. I had
no idea how crappy TWA was until I read this
story!! They have not made much if any profit
this year, when most airlines are making $$$$
up to the top of the troposhpere!!!! TWA sucks
and if things don't change they could be looking
to sell!!! TWA wake up and smell the jet fuel!!!
A Cessna 150 at a flight school is more profitable!

It is going to take time for them to turn it around. They have a very old fleet but with new orders for the 757 and last nights 717 order, their fleet will be young, reliable, and provide better ontime service. For new long haul aircraft they are looking at the 747/777 or the A330. Hopefully with these new aircraft they will become more profitable.

I'm sure they will turn around. But will take some time. They are in bad
need of better long haul aircraft. I don't think they have been really
able to replace the 747s and L1011s on those routes yet. They were
on an incredible turn around till flight 800 went down. Their decision to
get rid of the 747s and L1011s immediately after that is very admirable
(they clearly put passenger safety 1st before profits and routes).
I hope they'll be back to the size they used to be. I remember when I
was a kid - i saw more TWA and PanAm 747s in Frankfurt than Lufthansa
aircraft. Oh well... i guess that was then and this is now.

I've flown on 9V-SPK.

TWA employees have been throught the wringer with a series of goofy managers over the years, Carl Icahn being a prime example. I have flown TWA quite a bit over the last few years and the service has been good. At times when I have been able to upgrade to First Class I have found the service exemplary.
On the SFO-STL lunch service, one is still wined and dined like the old days. Compare this to Delta who serves a dried up piece of chicken and potato salad under similar circumstances (SFO - DFW).

Lately, I have heard that TWA management has been greedy, taking large bonuses, etc. Yes, they need to return to profitability, but to say 'TWA sucks'
is an insult to people who work very hard. Most of the people with the airline are
quite senior, they know the ropes and they stick with it because they want to. I'd
much rather be served by folks like this than some bimbos - male or female -
that have just been dragged in.

TWA has made an impressive turn around in the last couple of years. I'm glad they are finally updating their extremely aging fleet.

cv990 - I have to agree with you. Their service is second to none in
todays airline market in the us. They do need changes in management
to get things back on top, which they are not too far away from if they
make the changes. The recent demands by the TWA workers in this
repect is a very positive step in that direction. (You can read more
about this at http://biz.yahoo.com/apf/981208/twa_protes_1.html )
But for some reason I always thought that Carl Icanh was instrumental
in TWAs turnaround till the flight 800 incident ... may be i was wrong :(

I don't know but it looks like management has made another mistake in ordering both the 717 and A318. They serve the same purpose. That is like Cathay Pacific with their B777-200s and A330-300s.

>>>You know, this is probably controversial. Who's to say that some sort of shake-up wasn't necessary -- he certainly provided and infusion of cash, but I have read and heard a few things about the Icahn years that cast some doubt on his understanding of TWA and the airline industry in general.

One detail regards a liquor distribution company owned by Icahn's wife. I'm told that Carl I. made TWA buy liquor miniatures from her company at inflated prices. Effectively, she reaped a personal profit at the expense of TWA. If this is true, it does not point to an individual who really cares about the airline.
