I know someone out there that works for Delta must know the answer to this question.
I booked an itinerary from LAX to Europe for myself and two friends and upgraded them. We were confirmed for ATL-MAD,FCO-ATL,ATL-LAX but it doesn't look like LAX-ATL is going to clear.
I am a Platinum medalion, one of my friends has the same ranking with Continental and the other has no elite status with any airline. We are all on the same itinerary. My question is, would we all be upgraded (or not) based on my status or the person who has no elite status? Or, would we all be upgraded individually based on our status? Just curious how this works.
Thanks in advance to anyone who can clear this up for me.

Everything would be off your status. In regards to upgrades, a CO Plat is the same as a Delta nobody; neither gets complimentary upgrades. You would be able to upgrade one of your friends at 24 hours out (priority is below Silvers requesting a solo upgrade) provided that they are on a Y/B/M/H/Q/K fare. If they are on a L/U/T fare, they are not eligible for companion upgrades.
Also, you can only request companion upgrades on the ATL-LAX/LAX-ATL legs. If you want, you can use your Platinum Medallion Upgrade certificates on all three of you provided that you are all booked in Y/B/M class; otherwise none of you can upgrade on the ATL-MAD/FCO-ATL legs.

As I said, we are already upgraded on the international legs and the return flight to L.A. from Atlanta (using Medalion Updgrade certificates). Those were confirmed at time of booking.
I was just curious about the inner workings. For now I will have to go with Pope's answer because he provided documentation.

Pope is correct. The EUA scans the itinerary and uses the lowest Elite level for processing of space-available upgrades. You may want to try giving Delta a call and seeing if they can move the other two passengers onto a separate e-ticket number.

I take it you're then using PMUs for the domestic legs instead of the Medallion complimentary upgrades. In that case, it's all based off of G inventory for the domestic segments (which it sounds like the one you're interested in), which is a whole seperate bucket than the Medallion Complimentary V inventory bucket. It's tough to say it'll open; in general though (from reports in FlyerTalk), the V bucket seems to open up a lot more than the G bucket as departure gets closer. As for priority, I think G is based on time of request; for some reason I think it's all timestamp irregardless of status. G bucket covers PMUs and using miles to upgrade. It's tough to say though if a G bucket will trump a V; DL's a little unclear over that.
