Engines are valuble ( especially low time ones ) and can be sold, leased "power by the hour", or used on another plane in the storers fleet. The details of the storage and who is doing the storing are unknown to me, ( airline? leasing company? dealer? scrapper? ) but you get the idea.

When I visited Davis-Monthan AFB,they said that engines were removed and sealed in casket-like containers so they were protected internally from dirt, bird, bug nests - etc. Also to keep internal parts from rusting/corroding.
