My girlfriend who works for OH at MDW just found out that mainline DL may start service soon out of MDW again. And if this rumor is true what kind of aircraft will thay fly in.

Thanks,
Matthew

DL's operations at MDW have been all over the place. Just a few years ago DL has 3-4x daily 733 service from ATL-MDW and 3-5x daily CRJ service to CVG. 733 service was downgraded to CRJs and then back to 738s in 2002 or so. Now DL has ATL-MDW, CVG-MDW has been dropped (as was the short-lived BOS-MDW), and LGA-MDW (which was originally LGA-ORD). I don't know what DL is doing in Chicago, or if they know either. If indeed DL mainline restarts service to MDW my bet is that it would only be 1-2x daily from ATL with an MD-88. Can't see anything more occurring.

I remember when I worked for OH at MDW we had 6 flight's to ATL on the 800's and 3 CRJ's to CVG and A DH flight to CVG on a FRJ. Then through the month's OH got rid of all the CVG flight's then DL down graded us with he 37-200's, and we were down to 1 originator that departed at 0545 then a turn that arrived at 1130 and departed at 1215. so our mornings were slow and boring, but we made friends at the Dunkin Donuts at the Orange Line El stop...

I would guess MD-88's as well, possibly some 738's, but certainly nothing beyond that.

X2

I'm going to check the schedules tomorrow in DLTerm and see what I can uncover coming up down the pipline.

That said, network/fleet management is still getting feedback from revenue management and from the individual stations regarding loads, flight times, and station needs for the fall season (an admittedly slower time of the year until about mid November). We just got done going over our Fall/Winter schedule draft just this past Friday and it should be now in the system by tomorrow.

Cheers.

It would be nice if DL did bring back mainline to MDW or ever upgrade some of the CRJ to E170 and on a side note I miss the CVG flts too.

They could but why would they? Is there that mucch traffic between these city pairs not already owned by AA or UA? I realize they are building up LAX but that just seems like a loss leader route that really won't add any value to the network.

I may be wrong, but I thought I remember someone I work with saying that most of the ERJ-170s are being reallocated somewhere else. I think this is the main reason we're getting ours back at MLI. I could be wrong, like I said, but I thought I remember hearing this somewhere.

Not to sidetrack the thread, but would you mind checking out what's coming for SYR in the future? We had 2x mainline and 3x CRJ to ATL, but they seem to have downgraded the MD80s to CR7s, and last I knew, the '80s weren't scheduled to come back like originally planned for the winter schedule. DL carries a ton of pax at SYR to Florida and the Caribbean via ATL, and I hope they see the light and upgrade us back to mainline at least for the winter (738s, please!).

I'd say it's very doubtful. I seem to remember DL operating ORD-LAX ten to fifteen years ago, usually with a 763, but times have changed.

As far out as I can see, SYR is only getting CRJ's and E40's to JFK/ATL/CVG.

Sorry man.

In DLTerm, there are no mainline aircraft between MDW and any DL city.

Sorry. At least that is what is showing up right now....though, as always, all of this is subject to change.

Best.

DL's operations at MDW have been all over the place.

Well, if you look at it city by city, it makes some sense:

CVG: The suspension of service coincided with DL's 'right-sizing' of the CVG hub

ATL: Like many markets, it went to RJs at the beginning of the decade. MDW was identified along with some other markets (MCI was one of them IIRC) as a route for the Shuttle 738s. This occurred because MDW is not a station with a lot of Medallions and DL did not need a lot of frequency on the route. But when the Shuttle 738s disappeared, so did mainline. The route is now mostly 70-seaters (though the E70/CR7 mix varies somewhat), but the frequency is fairly stable around 8x-9x daily.

LGA: The service was moved from ORD for two reasons. Slots at ORD were a problem, and DL could not increase JFK service to 5x daily at ORD and keep the LGA service there. They reasoned that they were catering to NYC-originating traffic with the LGA service and that, to the extent that the airport utilized mattered, MDW would be somewhat preferred for its lack of delays and its proximity to the Loop (I personally disagree with this analysis, but that's outside the scope of this thread). So they moved it to LGA.

In terms of the return of mainline, it's definitely a possibility. ORD and MDW have the same number of ATL frequencies now and FL flies 8 daily flights MDW-ATL, so it's not as though MDW has too much frequency, but perhaps the additional capacity (and/or the substitution of mainline for a couple of Connection flights for fleet scheduling reasons) is necessary. So it's not out of the question, but at the same time, I see no signs that MDW is crying out for mainline.

This is very interesting...I never really realized that the individual stations can have a say in what their needs are. Obviously, profits are what drive the decisions, but it is nice to know that the station managers can at least beg for mainline or new destinations if they see they are needed and can convince revenue mgmt it would work. Or am I misunderstanding the scenario that takes place before each schedule overhaul?

Back in the early 80's and late 70's DL ran DC-9's to MDW-STL twice a day.

I connected through MDW recently and noticed that the 2 DL gates are on different concourses. I realize it's not really that long of a walk from A1 to B1 but do you think they are going to swap with F9 soon so they can have B2? Barring that they could probably take A2 from CO since it seems to get only a couple of turns a day.

A1 is a city gate (as are A2 and A3), and CO has preferential leases on all three gates on C. Now that AA is gone and CO has cut back some (down to 5 daily flights), DL could probably consolidate its operations on C if CO was willing.
