Hello every1!
Here's what's happening on the island's aviation scene.
~ Harbour Air have started scenic flights around Malta and scheduled flights between the Grand Harbour at Valletta and Mgarr Harbour at Gozo island.
~ Air Malta will continue operating the twice-weekly Malta-Benghazi route throughout the winter schedule (Tue & Thu). Air Malta's Malta-Frankfurt route gets an extra 2 weekly winter frequencies (Mon & Sat), up to five from last winter's thrice-weekly (Wed, Fri & Sun) - the codeshare agreement between Air Malta and Lufthansa on both companies' services between Frankfurt and Malta remains in effect.
~ Ryanair have announced a Valencia-Malta thrice-weekly service starting on October 30th, operating Tue, Thu & Sat with mid-day schedules. Ryanair start thrice-weekly Girona-Malta and Bremen-Malta services on the same day (also operating on Tue, Thu & Sat) and a Stockholm(NYO)-Malta twice weekly service from October 31st (operating Wed & Sat).
~ Air Malta and Lufthansa have started codesharing on some Bremen-Frankfurt and Bremen-Munich services operated by Lufthansa. This agreement remains in effect until the end of October 2008.
~ Air Malta will wetlease some of its A320s to Eithad Airways for the winter months.
~ Air Malta will continue to operate some of its Catania routes throughout the winter timetable; the Munich-Catania route will continue to be served five times weekly - three frequencies are operated by Air Malta (Mon, Wed & Fri) and two flights are operated by Lufthansa (Sat & Sun), with both airlines codesharing on each other's services; the Gatwick-Catania service will continue to operate thrice-weekly (Mon, Thu & Sat); Air Malta will operate Malta-Casablanca, via Catania in both directions once weekly (Sun) - for the summer schedule, this service is operating in a triangular routing twice weekly (Fri: MLA-CMN-CTA-MLA, & Sun: MLA-CTA-CMN-MLA); Air Malta stops its thrice weekly (Tue, Thu & Sat) Catania-Geneva service at the end of October.
~ Olympic Airlines remains Air Malta's codeshare partner for Air Malta's twice-weekly (Mon & Fri) service between Athens and Malta through the winter schedule. Air Malta's drift towards Star Alliance partners doesn't seem to apply for this destination. Codesharing with Aegean Airlines does not seem to be on the cards.
~ Air Malta and Air One start codesharing on the Malta-Rome, Malta-Reggio Calabria and Rome-Reggio Calabria flights operated by Air Malta with the start of the winter timetable.
~ Air Malta's weekly (Tue) Barcelona-Reggio Calabria ends on September 20th.
~ GB Airways' Manchester-Malta flight goes from daily to thrice-weekly (Mon, Thu & Sun) for the winter schedule (leaving their daily Gatwick-Malta unchanged).

Air Malta's two 733s will be leaving the fleet during this winter schedule.
By the way, I was wondering why KM & LX do not codeshare on the MLA-ZRH route. It could result in additional sales for KM and an additional route for LX. The same goes for GVA-MLA and GVA-CTA.

Wow!
I am surprised no one has yet mentioned, that they have heard rumours Ryanair will be launching a base with 50 aircrafts based at MLA!
I do love it how you guys hold out in hope, but I don't think it will ever happen... MLA will continue to see a growing number of FR services at the airport but no metal based there!

50 FR aircraft based at Malta??! Probably not in my lifetime, but I certainly wouldn't go as far as saying that FR will never base their metal at MLA. I guess we'll just have to wait and see.
And btw, MLA-BRE starts Sept. 25th (not Oct. 30th as stated above).

There have been talks as far as I know. But there seems to be some disagreement over the frequency of flights. LX would prefer to have a daily year round service I think but KM would not.

There seems to be some movement in the negotiations between LX and KM. From the winter schedule on KM will be rescheduling its flight to offer better connectivity with LX's waves structure at ZRH.

I always wondered why KM never flew to BEG from MLA.
The island has always been very popular with Serbian tourists and I remember a friend of mine (he owns a travel agency) saying a few months back that JU's monopoly and high fares have killed the interest for the island, and diverted the tourists instead to Greece, Turkey and Tunis.

It's great to hear that KM & LX might be moving closer to a codeshare agreement. It's very interesting to read that KM might adjust the schedule for their ZRH flight. I wonder how it's going to be like!
I think that they should also explore co-operation on the MLA-GVA route. It's a pity that KM does not fly to GVA in winter as I think that the Geneva area is one of the prettiest areas in one of the most beautiful countries in Europe. Codesharing with LX on this route might make this route work in winter as well.
I think that the traffic between BEG and MLA is low yield VFR. There's a lot of Serbs living and working/studying in Malta, but other than that, I do not think that there are any business connections, and I do not think that there's any Maltese outbound traffic to BEG.

Could this be a prelude to a KM/LX codeshare?
Btw, Corsair of France is operating a couple of B744 flights to MLA from ORY this month. I miss the sight of its A330s and 747s, previously regular visits at MLA...

I think a code-share is on the cards, especially seeing as Lufthansa already has various code-shares in place with Air Malta. Would be cool if they would maintain their frequency to ZRH during the winter season.

SR used to fly ZRH-MLA year-round 5x weekly with 32S equipment. In summer, SR occasionally sent down larger aircraft, such as the MD11... and that was some sight!
It would be nice to see KM maintaining their current frequency throughout the winter, but I frankly do not know if the demand is there.
