I believe that the Sultan of Brunei switched from a luxuriously appointed 747-400 to an A340, equally as extravagant. Anyone know why?
The A340 is cheaper to operate, and probably has greater range (I'm not sure which model it is), but the 747 has the ultimate luxury: more interior volume.

The Sultan of Brunei is d*** rich !! He has, if if remember correctly, 14 planes. I read in an article that when the king travels with his wife, he goes on a 747, and his wife goes on another jet (the article only said a 100 seat jet).
But i read in the same article that the Brunei royal family is a bunch of idiots (because of the family having sex with each other) especially the king's brother, jefri, who bought most of these luxurious things.

I wonder what kind of 100 seat jet his wife travels on. Sounds like a converted DC-9. I figured they'd probably keep the 744 as a status symbol, more than anything. Who wants to bet they'll buy an A380, sell the 744 and 100 seater, and let the wife have the upper deck and the king have the main deck.

Oxygen,
Are you sure that article you read was about the Sultan of Brunei and not the Sultan of West Virginia?
(Having sex with family members)
I couldn't even get my dad to let me borrow the family truckster when I was 18. To get a plane, geeze!

Its well known that there have been some serious wastes of money in Brunei, to the tune of several billion dollars. There won't be any aircraft purchases in the near (or distant) future

Wished I had been so rich to receive an A340 for my birthday - certainly better than a car.

I, for one, will be quite happy to fly gliders at Moontown this summer and get my 98-99 VW Passat in Oct. 2001. It ain't a Cirrus SR20, but it'll have to do.

I believe the A340 is for this son.
A340 does not have longer range than 744 due to the fact A340 does not have enough power and have to stay at lower initial crusing altitude this burning more fuel.
I don't think it would sit to well for his son to have a 744, since the old man is still the head of the state.

A few years ago into LHR he flew on a 763, the 744 followed with his court (ie. servants, govt officials). I believe this is the usual arrangement.
The Saudi's are similar, the except here the king has a 743 with a number (3?) 747-SP's, the wives use these often for shopping trips to London, Paris etc.

The Sultan does owns 3 A340s. One has been sold to the Jordanian Royal family. The rumour is that the Sultan repossed the aircraft from his son after a fight between those two men. Anyway, the A340 had been parked at SXF for some months as nobody was interested in the plane. The A340 the Sultan purchased is a very special verion of the A340 and couldn't be transformed into an ordinary A340. Therefore, the A340 coul;d only be used as VIP aircraft. As not many people can afford an A340, the plane had to wait some months before it entered VIP service for the Jordanian Royal family. Currently they use the A340 as the replacement for the Tristar which became too old.
Currently the Sultan of Brunei also owns a B747-400 (formerly a Lufthansa B747)
