I've been on BUF-EWR-BUF numerous times and it was always packed. As for flying transcon on 737... I've done EWR-SJC and it's not the most relaxing flight due to the crampy feel you get from flying a narrowbody for a few hours. All flights were on time and service was what I expected- nothing spectacular.
You're lucky to fly out of BUF, I like it much better than YYZ.

If you can get the exit row on the MD-80, that is your best bet. The exit rows on the 737-700 are not too bad, but there is noticeably less room on the 737 than the MD-80. The farthest I have flown on the 737 was from SNA to IAH in the exit row of the -700 model and it was not great, but it was not the worst experience I have had. A flight from IAH-ONT was very good on the MD-80.

ERJ-135, rode on one the other day from PWM-CLE. New airplanes but the seats seem small and it's a cramped airplane when it's full. Nice to be able to bring oversize carry-on's and be able to check them planeside and get them back planeside after the flight. Don't try this on a regular airliner, they will end up at baggage claim.
Not sure when you are going but EWR and CLE can be impacted by snowfall. I go out of my way to use America West cause the winter weather is always good at the PHX hub.

There will probably be movies on the 737-700 and -800, but not on the MD-80. I do not know about the ERJ because I have never been on one, but I have been on the CRJ and they do not have any types of in-flight entertainment, so they are probably the same.

I haven't been on coach on the Continental 73NGs yet, but First Class is excellent. The seats are more comfortable than their counterparts on the 733s and 735s.
I've done the MD80 on the EWR-BUF run many times too and its quick flight (usually 40-60 mins) so choice of seats isn't really a big deal. Try and get in the 2 section of the 5 across though.
As for the ERJ, the only decent seat is 1A, but that is held for Elite members as some kind of quasi first-class. If you cant swing that, then go for the bulkhead - i think its 2BC on the ERJ-135 and 3BC on the ERJ-145, but I'm not positive.

I hope you enjoy your flights. Sorry I fly the B767 so I will not be your pilot. But if you like prior to pushback feel free to say hello to the crew.
You should find the entertainment system on both the -700 and -800 good. Sorry, as many have said you might find it tight in back. But the movie makes it go fast. And for all the Boing haters. We at CO are adding a Mid-Lav on all the B737-800, and B737-900 starting later this year 2001.
