Hello, as an airport ops crew in the U.S., I was looking to go to Calgary (to rent a car and visit Banff/Jasper) in mid September and try to non-rev through one of the airlines in my pass bureau. I can use WestJet (from LAX, PHX, or LAS), or UA or F9 from DEN. Since none of these airlines have counters/service at the airport I work, I was wondering if I could get any recommendations from employees of the airlines mentioned. First, is it better to wait later in the fall, or is mid-Sept. a good bet for seat availability? For WestJet, which city is the best bet to have open seats to YYC? UA and F9 have only RJ service from DEN, is that right? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

WS uses 800 series 737 on a lot of their LAX-YYC routes and LAS-YYC routes. Loads are usually quite high I believe, as WS is Canadas leading carrier to Vegas. I think your best bets are probably to fly sooner than later as the traffic to LAS and LAX start to pick up as the weather gets colder from now on or rather September on... That's the easiest to use. I believe WS may be opening or is opening a LAS YLW route but the drive would be longer. Anyways hopes this helps! I say YYC sooner is your best bet!

Go with UA or F9 via DEN. It's 737's and some RJ 700's. Way more flights to choose from than any city WS flies to.

That's true as well. Although WS is prefered by a lot of travellers, the frequency to transborder destinations is rather limited...

The battle to LAS for AC and WS is very tight. Let's have a look, this all off the top of my head: YYC, YVR, and YEG are virtually equal. WS has a YWG flight but AC has YUL. AC has an A319 and an E90 from YYZ right now but WS just has the one flight...AC has three A319's from YYZ this winter but WS only has two, I'm assuming those will be -700's...and AC has YOW coming too...still think WS is the winner?

Well I said preferred by a lot of travellers. I didn't say all, I didn't say most. And I said a lot, because it's true. You need to not get so offended. Yes you work for or love AC or both. And yes we all know AC employees for a large part do not like WS, but no need to get offended. Can you blame people. With their great IFE, culture, customer service, as well as cometative pricing what's not to like? Now before you say well their pricing is comparable I realize that. Let's not forget the destinations AC offers that WS doesn't as well as the trans atlantic flights out of YYC, anyways that's regardless. Seeing that they just ordered another 20 aircraft, I think that's proof that they are preferred by a lot of travellers as I just said...

With AC's order for the 777's and 37 787's I guess that is also proof that a lot of people like AC as well?  Big grin

One other thing  Big grin ,I don't know where you got this crap about most AC folks hating WS but it is pure BS. The industry in Canada is small, we work side by side with WS employee's in most airports and we get along fine.

Um, no it's not...that's at the heart of this dicussion. AC has more seats out of YYC daily. Period. That doesn't, however, make them a superior carrier...nor did I say that. I love WS...fly them YYC-YYJ whenever I'm heading that way because the 737NG is obviously superior to the CRJ2 on that route.

I don't believe that to be reflective of AC employees in general,perhaps it's because they're older and have seen many changes over the years(call it maturity). It wasn't too long ago that AC was commonly thought of within WS as the "Evil Empire". As much as it's a good thing to have a competitor to set targets against,one should remember that it's just a pay-cheque and not to make it too personal.

Out of DEN on F9 it is E170's to YYC. And it operated by Republic Airlines. Most interline agreements do to include Contract Express carriers like OO and RW.

I'll agree with you there. I'd rather fly a Boeing if I can any day. And the heart of the discussion was trying to help someone fly non rev and get his best chance... I don't want an AC WS debate... Any forum that mentions WS turns into one and really it's rather tiring. One country, two airlines... What's with all the competition and grudge???

I can agree somewhat with what you are saying. Cometition is healthy. I just say that based on personal experience. From flying AC in the past I've heard a lot of agents bad mouth WS and how WS employees think they're so great cause "yay they're from WS". Obviously they all don't think that way and for a large part they are generally nice people like myself or the next guy...

So not papers, but a paper. Likely in the travel section which is little more than an unpaid advertisement.

Once again, your personnel experience is perfectly valid, but don't go around saying that most AC employee's hate WS, because simply you don't know most AC employee's.

I'd still say DEN is your best bet because of frequencies. The only flight to YYC from MSP is the NW one. SEA-YYC is served by both QX and AC but like you said you can only take QX.

The more options the better when non-revving in case you get bumped from one flight. UA has several flights per day DEN-YYC and F9 is half empty most of the time hehe.

I have one word for you, when flying into a city your own airline does not serve. BACKUPs! Be sure to get yourself backup passes on at least another carrier, if not 3. That way you can go from gate to gate, in order to get out. Its been awhile since I got stuck anywhere, just for the fact that I always had backups.

Back to the topic of the thread rather than the usual whose is bigger or can pee farther discussion. Remember that Banff is in the mountains. So fall and winter come early. Not only do the days get shorter like everywhere, but that much of the area is in mountain valleys and the sun needs to get pretty high in the sky to start to heat things up. So if weather is an important part of your consideration than go earlier rather than later. I like May and in October when the crowds are less and hotels are a good price because it is between the major summer tourists and the start of ski season. Mid September should be ok too but during the week would be better than the weekend for prices. Lake Louise is a short drive from Banff so be sure to work some time in to visit there. Take a sweater or light jacket cause it can cool off a lot at night. I can give some hotel recommendations and restaurants if you give me an idea of budget and likes etc.
