Hello everybody,

As the previous thread on that topic is now archived, I start a new one.

Ethiopian Buys MD-11 Freighter (by Dkny Jul 28 2007 in Civil Aviation)

According to Ethiopian press release, the aircraft is now to be delivered in January 2009, and to answer Brendows question (on the previous thread) the aicraft might very well be flying with JJ right now, and thus would be PT-MSJ as the other two are to go to Aeroflot Cargo.

What haven't been mentionned on the above thread is that ET intends to lease a second MD-11F from the end of 2009. Could it be a former AY aircraft or a lease with GR ?

Is the MD11F going to become a permanent fixture in the ET fleet or is this simply intermittent lift till a decision is taking with regards to cargo metal? Either way this should add another wrinkle of interest into the ET fleet.

Yes, they could have used increased cargo capacity and a heavier lift back in the winter when they leased two WO D1F's.

Yes, but the old colour scheme would have been better I think.

Well, I believe that if a company is deciding to buy an aircraft , it means the aircraft is to stay for a good while, however what is permanent ? In one word: nothing. Big grin But as Flyer732 said, during the first five months of the year, ET has leased two DC-10-30Fs, one for three months and the second for five, this could have been a way to assess the needs before deciding to go ahead to get an aircraft offering a greater payload/range compared to the B752Fs.

It could be indeed if they decide to go for an ACMI contract as for GR, but if they choose to lease an aircraft that they'll have to maintain, engine commonality just for the two aircraft could be a factor, or even with the rest of the fleet as their B767s are powered by PW4062s

The plane is being used as a passenger plane with TAM and will be delivered to ET in January 2009, after being converted to a freighter.

Thanks again. So it seams that ET's future MD-11F is to be that aicraft:

I higly doubt , the second MD11 will come from Finnair , since seems all the Finnish planes will go to Aeroflot.

To date, only two of the seven are known to go to Aeroflot Cargo. Do you have any source for what you say there ?

I'm rather surprised ET was able to snatch one off the market, given the fact that almost every major cargo airline including UPS, LH, FX is on the hunt for these package freighter.

Airlinerlist latest update (19.08) shows that ET's future MD-11F is indeed PT-MSJ.

Another guess for that second MD-11F to be leased, ET could well lease one of the nine remaining aircraft BR has in its fleet.

BTW, FM has just received its third MD-11F (B-2178) - a former BR too...

Ethiopian CEO recently said in an interview that ET will hire trained foreign pilots for the MD-11 since it is a new type of plane for ET and they don't want to train their own pilots for the new type of aircraft.

That kind of comment somewhat indicates that the MD-11F is planned as short/medium-term equipment. Even though ET has ordered the B787 I wouldn´t be too surprised to eventually see them opt for a mixed B787-8 / A350-900 & -900F fleet.

What surprises me though is that with that comment I would have guessed that it would be easier to opt for wet-leasing World Airways (and others) equipment instead of taking an own one.
