Pinnacle Fined By Osha In Death Of Employee At DAY

The federal government has concluded that Pinnacle Airlines Inc. violated workplace safety regulations in the May 16 death of a baggage handler pinned in a baggage elevator at Dayton International Airport.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration issued three citations of safety violations against Pinnacle for the death of Catrina Coffman, 21, of Harrison Twp., who was killed while trying to remove luggage jammed in a small elevator lift. The Montgomery County coroner ruled that Coffman's death was an accident, and that she died of asphyxiation due to mechanical chest compression and blunt force injury to the torso.

Not surprising, based own how cheap Pinnacle is. Pinnacle loves to short-staff flights and raise hell to the employees after they are late. There equipment is bargain basement junk at most stations.

What an insult. That girl's life was worth a whopping $7000 fine. Oh, it was a $13500 fine but it was negotiated down to $7000. I'm sure there will be some kind of settlement to the family, but that's all insurance anyways, so in the end it doesn't really cost anything. $7000 is nothing to a company like that. Will that correct the company's actions in the future? Who knows...

In GFK Pinnacle has a lot of employees, a lot more work each flight then NW ever had here. The stations that used to be mainline have the equipment that mainline left behind.

Our 9E equipment is in great shape. Its based on how well its taken care of, we got a piece of crap NW tug that we totally had to replace just about every part on it to make it safe to operate.

Pinnacle is pretty committed to safety. I believe what happen was 50/50. I am sure both were at fault and this had a tragic ending... Some accidents do, and some dont.

Pinnacle cut us back to a total of 2 ramp people for a aircraft turn and the RON. We got around it at first by not pulling up the jetbridge or opening the door until the 40 gate check bags were unloaded, then the regional manager at the time from state of MO was a jackass and had us send 1 of the 2 people to the Jetbridge and had to open the door immediately. So it ended up with person 1 ramp agent doing jetbridge and person 2 agent parking the airplane, opening the door, lowering the rails, pulling the beltloader up the the aircraft, unloading a few bags, putting them on the cart, climb back up the plane and unload a few more, etc. It took forever and was major dangerous. Then the sole ticket counter person would show up about 20 minutes before departure, since almost all these were 30 minute turns, and the gate agent working the jetbridge would come back to the ramp and we would unload, then go back to the counter to get departure bags since management did not let us take them out when the plane arrived at 30 minutes before departure. We would load the airplane bags, people and dispatch etc. Then the incoming bags would get delivered about 35 minutes after arrival. What a total piss poor was things were handled. They always worked short staffed, but when the new regional from MO took over he was a jackass and everything was on a skeleton crew. He was never concerned about that, he had more important things to concern himself with, like us answering the unlisted phone number without using the 10 line spill blah blah blah.

Once the union came in it got a little better work rule and saftey wise, but the local management would have us working to 1 am and come back at 5:30am the next morning on a regular basis even after the union, as the union was to weak and panzy to put up a fight about it.

That sounds like a lot of complaining. I always had 2 (and that included ops/cs for bag claims...) for a CRJ-900 RON and that included jetway and all the other things you mentioned... It's perfectly sufficient. On a turn it was 3 or 4 depending on the day and those were all crossutilized CRS/Ramp/Ops.

Third off, did it ever cross your mind to pull the jetbridge to the plane AFTER you parked it? Why wasn't the second agent wing walking? Most captains will not park unless there is a wing walker. I could go on and on, but I don't want to waste the time, nor detract from the meaning of the original posters post about what happened in DAY.

First off you sound like a stupid arse. Everything was totally changed when we went from our Regional manager from AL that moved to FL to when the stupid arse from from MO took over. He is by far the worst manager in the worst manager in the whole 9E system. He is a arrogant SOB that cares more about himself than any employees. At the time the best 2 regional managers was from AL then moved to FL, then we had the tough but very very fair Regional manager from MS. The arsehole came from the city that had a whopping 2 flights per day. He had no business being in the position he was in, then the smart management from MEM promoted him above all the regional managers. The regional manager from MS was much more qualified for he position. Put up with there sh** for 14 years, have been TDY to apx 20 stations, was major involved in every aspect of the company until he came around. What a jacka**. He drove away hundreds of great employees.

I agree 100%, that 7000 dollar fine was a slap in the face. It should have been in the millions of dollars. Pretty bad that OSHA is saying an employees life is only worth 7000.00

It should be enough to financially hurt a employer.

I know all of there positions, names, hire dates and employee numbers. I am very good friends with 2 of them, not MR. Ahole from his old closed station that used to have to flights a day.
