BA New Club And The 777

Well seems a small (of potentially big) hiccup in the installation of the new CW seats on the 777. It has now been made official within BA that the seats have failed the FAA 3G floor stress test for the new seats.

While a resolution is being found, the latest 'estimate' of when the first 777 will receive the new seat is February 2008 - at the earliest.

36 of the 747 fleet have now received the new cabin, with the entire 747 fleet due to be completed by NOV 07.

50 longhaul aircraft have now been fitted with AVOD IFE.

With the great popularity of the 1st generation of flat bed club world, and the customer reaction to the 2nd generation; i'm sure BA will be able to survive without your custom.

I'm quite surprised the seat has failed this test, considering it is lighter than the old seat. I'd have thought in a G-force monitored deceleration test that a lighter seat would have performed better...

Probably requires a few more mounting bolts, and some larger washers !!!!

It is indeed probably something as simple as this - modified anchor-points, different bolts etc. I doubt it will involve something as substantial as floor-reinforcement, thus adding additional weight to the airframe.

The report that the seat has initially failed the 772 floor stress tests suggests that the first aircraft has had the new seats fitted already. Is this correct? If so does anyone know which aircraft and whether there is a planned in-service date?

No 777 has the product fitted at the moment.

I flew from LGW to IAH on the 777 -- "old" new club world, obviously. What I really didn't like was no AVOD. Will that change before the retro fit to new seats? Or will AVOD not come untilt he new seats? I thought the "old" new club world quite a step up from Biz in DL and AA (which at the time still had old style seats). I am flying next month a 744 ORD - LHR, and LHR -- BOM in club. I must confess I am hoping for the "new new" club world -- the reviews have been very good.

As to the layout, I found it to be quite spacious. I had a window (14A I think), and felt like I was in a private cabin. With the seat config, and being short (5'6'') not only was the bed long enough, I was able to close out the world in club world!! As so many others have said, BA has a great product.



Can I have a mojito on this flight?

True...however, it's not hugely lighter than the old one so this might not be a major factor.

Yes, if I remember correctly, they had the same problem with the 3G test with the 744's, basically, the seat has to withstand 2 (I believe, not 100% sure) tests where the same seat must withstand at-least 2 tests of at-least 3G's and remain attached to the floor at the end, the problem they had on the 744, was that it would always pass the first test, but fail the second test. They sorted that out, which would leave me to believe it was a simple as doing what they did on the 744 to the 777.

I'm assuming you are talking '1G and 2G' as in first and second generation, not 1G as in the gravitational term. Basically:

1st club world- cradle seats (not sure when it was introduced, early 1990's or late 1980's)
2nd Club world- original flat beds (introduced in 2000)
3rd club world- Same as the 2nd club world but with darker, more padded seat covers and more subtle tones of colours used in the cabin features, such as the inter-seat blinds, where the colour was changed from blue/white to darker blue/cream to make it 'less bold' (introduced 2004 time I think)
4th club world- The current New Club world being rolled out (introduced 2007)
