Air India's Ex-UA 777s, A Question

Yes, I know what you're thinking, "another question from that TUI guy!"
And you'd be right!
So, does anyone know how long they are leased for and when they'll be returning to UA or be leased to other airlines?
And also, do they have United seats or did AI put their own in?

Thanks,
FLYTUITRAVEL.

I think they're leased until 2009. When they return - they go to the highest bidder.

They still have the UA seats.

They are leased for a minimum 5 year period expandable upto 7 years, which means 2009 earliest and 2011 latest

So in 2009, airlines can bid for them, and if noone is high enough, AI can keep them for up to 2 years? And I though UA needed all the L/H planes they can get, I always thought they would go back into service with UA.
Will give other airlines the oppurtunity to operate 777s though as I'm sure leasing costs will be much lower than now.

Thanks for the response.  Wink

We do need the jets, but management is not interested in getting them. The leases on the ex UA 777's were rejected by UA during the bankruptcy process, so I would be very surprised to see them come back. In fact, I was just out at our training center the other day and the word there is that the 777 fleet will stay at 52 aircraft for the foreseeable future. There is some rumors about some more 747-400's coming, but that is all it is, rumors. By next spring there will probably be no domestic 777 runs except for the Hawaii flights.

Don't the domestic 3-class flights also serve the purpose of getting the 777s from IAD to DEN or SFO for maintenance?

Really? Good news, but I didn't think there were that many P&W-powered 744s besides AI (?), KE, SQ (?)....
Also, how is the entertainment with the UA style interior, does it work well? Not AVOD I guess?

Heavy maintenance on the 777 is done in PEK. Welcome to outsourcing, although they do a good job out there. ORD, SFO, and IAD can do the rest of the regular maintenance. I was told yesterday that the 777 would be going all international, but remember, the long term planning committee at UA meets weekly, so this is subject to change.

In First and Business, it will be among the best in the industry. In coach, not so much. I haven't been on a -400 in a while, but I think it just has TV screens hanging from the ceiling and definitely no AVOD  Sad .

Sorry, I should have said, I mean on the ex-UA 777s currently with AI.  Smile
Will these (AI) 772s be refitted with the new AI interiors or stay with the UA ones?

Thanks.

Sorry, no clue. I work for UA so I know a bit about them, but I don't know at all what AI plans to do with them.

Almost certainly not, though I don't have any real information to back that statement  Smile

I don't think AI is going to refit these leased planes, given they're going really slowly about refitting their own 744s.

Oh, a shame. What is the state of the current interiors & entertainment system?
Also, does anyone know how long 9W A332 VT-JWD is leased for. The reason I ask is because I assume it is short-term because all the other A332s have GE engines...

UAL language: long term = one week

The time horizon by United seems to be very short term  Wink

9W has actually more than a couple RR frames-, they are leased from ILFC.

All new aircraft coming in have state of the art interiors including the A32Xs for IC,

1 owned 744 has been refurbished to modern AVOD IFE and so will the remaining 5 owned ones ,

Laast i remember atleast 2 owned AI 310s were refurbished --upholstery galleys and seats and main screen LCDs, and some owned ones are undergoing conversion for AI cargo.

So these ones will be staying in the fleet for a while or just to make them more attractive to buyers?

I think these are long leases from ILFC, I believe that 9W will be getting a third RR bird.

What's the point of putting new interiors on planes you don't own. Of course, if there is money to be made by someone, you never know what can happen..
