So as I was waiting for the bus to my office this morning I hear a rather large plane on approach to CHO @ approximately 8:30 am EDT. Much to my surprise a FedEx DC10-10 was on final to RWY 03 at CHO. This was a rather shocking sight as the largest plane usually flown here is a Dash-8-300 or a CRJ, not to mention the main runway is only 6000' long.

So for those of you good with the flight tracking software could you give me any idea why a DC10 was in Charlottesville this morning... was it a diversion, scheduled, etc....

I didn't see any mention of a FedEx plane in CHO today, or all week. Do you know if it actually landed?

DesertJets - I checked a couple of trackers, and also saw no FedEx DC-10's flying into CHO today. Doesn't mean it didn't happen, it just isn't showing up on the flight trackers.

Could it have been heading to SHD instead? What is that, about 25 miles away? If so, it may have been FDX 9090 related to in this thread:

It was definitely on approach to RWY 03, whether or not it landed is another question. It is hard to miss a DC-10 poking its way through the low overcast/fog in approach config.

As for it being FedEx 9090, the displayed flight track has it too far north (I was in the parking lot next to University Hall @ UVA) and pointing in the wrong direction.

Flight trackers aren't all that reliable so I just emailed FedEx, we'll know within 48 hrs.

Agent X has FDX9090 doing at least 2 low-passes or touch and gos at CHO, one at 12:08z and one at 12:23z.
