Question About Ryanair.

Had a chance to fly FR yesterday (Nantes in France (NTE) to Bournemouth (BOH)) on one of their new 737-800s. I neither love or hate FR but it is functional and does the job, normally at a good price (two of us booked the night before and cost 90 Euro for two off BA at 800 quid!!).

However, I'm fully aware of all the money saving schemes FR has such as pay for everything extra, but the inside of these jets is cheap, nasty, gaudy colours and lots of plastic.

My one question is, why no seat back pocket? I've never not had one before and really missed it - moreso having my six year old daughter with me and I needed somewhere to put all her kit (colouring books etc!!).

A seat back pocket is an extra (albeit small) feature - it may seem petty to save a few pennies or however much on each pocket, but remember that the cost would be multiplied over every seat in every aircraft, potentially costing quite a bit.

Also, having no seat back pocket means no seat back pocket to clean, meaning an easier and quicker turnaround. The safety information is stuck to the headrest of the seat in front - no safety cards to go missing and reprinted.

Small things like this may seem trivial and tight-fisted, but can make a big impact in cost for an airline.

All on purpose. Of course, yellow and dark-blue paint is not cheaper than other, better-looking colors; it's all about maintaining the "we are cheap" image.

Agree that the seats can be horrible indeed...

This is the main reason. Every seat back pocket needs to be checked at every stop. Eliminating drastically reduces work to be done during stops.


As for FR, I agree that they get the job done. It's a matter of having the right expectations. If you expect mainline service, you will be disappointed. If you expect to be taken from A to B and nothing else you are ok. Sorry, from far from A to far from B.  Wink

They have signed quite some deals. For example, all CRL based aircraft will get ING Direct advertisement.

Wonder if they'd let BA advertise on them  Wink

I must admit, good coffee and a dead fit stewardess from Latvia! Captain was Italian and started applying full power just prior to linining up, just like they drive I'd imagine!!

In saying this, the one thing that REALLY pissed me off was I lost my wallet (too much drink!). I cancelled my Visa. When I checked in I had excess weight of 5kg which I had to pay 40 euro for. I have no problem with that, but I was told by a serly French woman that I could not pay with cash - cards only. I had 1400 Euro in cash on me and I couldn't use it. The bag had already been sent off and I was left having to find someone to pay the 40 Euro on his Visa and I gave him the cash.

Rediculous.
