Shanghai goes A321:

Quote:
Shanghai Airlines Co. said Friday its board has approved a plan to buy five A321 planes from Airbus to expand its fleet and sell four B757 craft to Aircastle and lease them back.

The catalogue price of the Airbus planes is about US$370 million, but the actual price will be lower than that, said the Shanghai-based carrier, adding that the delivery of the planes is scheduled between 2011 and 2012.

Even though a small order in size it is certainly a major victory for Airbus to break into the Shanghai Airlines Boeing-stronghold.

If they can't fill the 757 entirely and don't need the additional range, the A321 is way cheaper to operate. As their 757 are also pretty new there is still a lot of capital cost on them. Is see the Sale-and-Lease-back arrangement as some sort of first step in getting rid of them.

I agree. Shanghai Airlines has been all-Boeing since it began. This is a very significant shift in a rapidly growing and increasingly important airline.

Am I right in thinking that the Shanghai Airlines 757s were the last ones produced?

I'm guessing that these won't actually be a new order but part of the remaining unallocated planes from the 150 ordered last year?
