Anyone have any more info on this? I figure it being out of Santa Monica, it may be someone/some people well known.

I don't think a Lancair Colombia has 6 seats. Can anyone confirm?

RIP to the dead.

Nelson said she had her back turned at the time of the crash, as she was opening the airport coffee shop.

At 6PM - Hmmmmm

Saw the airport manager interviewed on CNN, and the story doesn't seem to match. She said she saw the aircraft come in too fast, and the pilot aborted the landing. She then said that she was going in to get on the radio and tell the pilot "what the wind was doing" when she heard the pops, then saw smoke. No doubt CNN will repeat the story, but at first listen it seemed that the crash occurred at the far end of the runway, not on approach.

4 seats

"The Kern County Sheriff's department said there were 4 adults and 2 children on board, including one infant."

Yeah, the Columbia was over loaded for sure. I'd like to know where all these people sat. Talk about weight and balance issues.

I wouldn't go that far. Four adults and two lap children, it's doable without overloading the aircraft. It may not be 100% safe, but it's certainly doable.

And another infant plus camping gear and I'll assume 1/2 tanks of fuel. The airplane was still flown over capacity and not smart.
