When my flight from Zurich was taxing into the gate today at BOS, I noticed a Russia State Transport Company IL-62 (My first one Big grin) and a Saudi Arabian MD-11. I have seen nether of these planes at BOS before this (though I have seen a Saudi L-1011).

Anyone know why either of those planes were there?

Thanks!

The IL-62 has been there since Friday and the MD-11 since yesterday. The Saudi MD-11 is a relatively common visitor but I've never seen or heard of the IL-62 being there before this visit (at least a Russian state one). There was also a Saudi Arabian Air Force BBJ parked next to the IL-62 for a day or so, but that departed shortly before the MD-11 arrived. I don't know why any of these planes are in BOS, though.

Also saw an all-white (except for gold logo on tail) Icelandair 757 depart early afternoon. Was this a cargo flight or something?

FI have a 757 or two transferred from their charter division Loftleidir Icelandic which had all white paint schemes. When they were transferred the Icelandair logos were applied but not the blue bottoms. The flight you saw was a regularly scheduled departure. This Summer they added a 4 or 5x weekly 14:35 departure to KEF, in addition to their 21:00 daily service.

That'd most likely be TF-FII.

Thanks, didn't realize the demand was there for the extra flight.

The same has happened with JFK this summer. I was under the impression that they had only added a second daily flight on Saturdays like Turkish but I discovered it is more like 4 or 5xweekly when I saw the second flight on other days. Olympic has also added a second flight to JFK this summer.

The saudi MD-11 was for the royal family and their crew who were visiting BOS. The Saudi regional jet was for a saudi materials company that was here for business. The russian plane I don't know about but I can check today. Yea for the summer Icelandair operates twice daily.

The best was watching the fire dept. hose off the brakes on the IL-62. One of the mechanics we have from MIA said that is common for that airplane, they used to see it in MIA all the time when IL-62's would fly in.

No prob surprised they used the Md-11 they usually use the L1011 with a stopover in SNN. you have to see what they take back with them. They came for s shopping spree last summer and they brough back tons of stuff including boats! Also the plane is watched 24/7 by the state police

Why where they in BOS? Our guess it was for the great migration of college kids in BOS. I doubt it really though.

It's quite possible that some Royal kid is attending College in the area. The other event that took place this weekend in Boston was the Deutsche Bank Championship which always attracts a good number of VIPs.

The Saudis fly into BOS mostly to receive medical attention from the area's hospitals, which are top-notch. They often rent out floors of five-star hotels-- and the shopping, which never stops. The secondary reason are also for the colleges and universities, which are also top-notch.

I believe you but I thought it would be fun to see this stuff packed in a airplane. Do they use LD3 for the shopping sprees?

I believe the MD-11 is now gone. I was outside a few minutes ago when a plane flew overhead and I noticed three birds flying in such a way that the jet was in the center. Then I noticed they weren't birds, but a fighter just escort.

Hmm...why would they do that? Would the brakes "overheat" during landing or would there be some other reason behind this?

Thanks

In the early 1990s I was based at BOS with a now-defunct NW Airlink commuter. Occasionally on weekends, a Saudia L-1011 would pull in to our ramp and sit there for two or three days. It was the north ramp, over near the Northwest hangar, across form the UPS and DHL aprons.

We were told the Saudi royal family had/has several members who attend local colleges. Thus the trips were combination family visits/shopping trips.

LD9 to be exact. usually used to put the couches and furniture on. and if the bottom cargo hold fills up, then they start placing the items, bed frames and stuff in the main cabin.

I saw the Russian IL-62 yesterday while flying out. No sign of the Saudi MD-11. It's always a treat to see a Russian aircraft in BOS.

The Russians were still here as of last night. It is kind of hard to see the jet from the road. It is parked in the North Cargo Area which is between the AA hangar and the NW hangar.
