I hadn't thought about it, but I just checked fares on WN, and they are good for that day. I wonder if TUS will be Dinged for SAN soon. Is it possible to take some sort of public transport from SAN to the race site (non-taxi)? If some people I know want to go, then I might, but if they say no, then I probably won't.

Public transport and San Diego are not synonymous.

the race directions lead to Harbor Drive (North and South).

The airport is also on Harbor Drive. North is a cheap cab fare.

Anyone going might consider taking the Coronado ferry and watch it for free on the Coronado side of the bay. You'll enjoy free seating on a grass lawn, with places to eat and shop within walking distance.

If anyone is interested in a Saturday meetup, let me know.

Is anyone else down here in San Diego getting tired of the way Mother Nature treats us on days of scheduled aviation events?!? It's raining! WTF!?

Ahhh, give it a little credit. It was the first city in modern times to re-instate the Light Rail System. I was very much a part of it.

I've only seen it rain one other time in September in the 49 years I have been here and that was just a few sprinkles from a tropical storm off southern Baja. This is quite different as it seems to be more like a winter storm pattern from the north. Quite odd!!!

Enjoy the races!

The rain at 10AM was very light. I stood under a tree and stayed dry. Then I was first in line!  Wink Then the sun came out, and now I am very sunburned.

By the time I got there, it was 1pm. It rained a little around 1, but the weather was pretty good after that. Got very hot and humid for a while though...yuck.

Will Call was an absolute joke though. I didn't actually get inside the gates until 2. But, I had a great time!

Also excuse the somewhat wierd photo with my friends at the end, we were just having fun at dinner after the show. Also excuse the mark on the top right of most pics, i believe its been fixed tonight. Also, AirTran, quite a suprise to see you on the 992 Was a fun event, hopefully it will decide to return next year.

I have to say the lines were ridiculous...and those folks who payed for the tickets: What was so different between that and just outside the gates?

I wasn't able to attend either day as I had another engagement that requried I return home on Friday 9/21. I did however get to see the practice sessions on Wednesday (9/19) and had my scanner to boot. I was in a hotel on the north side of downtown and one aircraft winged it's way right over the top of my Hotel in to Lindberg field around 4:30 PM Awesome airplane and sound to go with it.

I got their early so I toured the Midway museum and decided to watch the first race from the flight deck that gave me a elevated view but was kinda far from the action. The rest of the races I watched from the rocks of the north island it seemed to close for comfort some times. I am diffidently going back next year if it is held in San Diego again.

That it was. First time I've met another A.netter.

Not when you are at the front. Of course I got to San Diego 3 hours before the race started and had plenty of time to get to the lines.

Quoting Xjramper (Reply 12):

Free race program with interesting stuff in it given out by hot girls dressed like flight attendants. I was closer to the action, so I did not have to use as much zoom on my pictures, so they turned out better. There were also screens where they showed live video from the cockpit of the planes. I didn't have one anywhere near me, so I missed out, but it would have been a definite advantage. There was also grass to sit on.

I wondered the same thing when I first got there and tried to find the end of the Will Call line. We seemed to have a good view from outside the gates. But, once I got inside, I realized you had a much better view of the entire course from inside. Also, it was nice to be able to hear the commentary. Unfortunately it was very crowded and hard to see at times. I eventually climbed down onto the rocks and had a decent view of half the course (I was at the north embarcadero park). My pics didn't turn out well at all. Everything was severely back-lit and the reflections from the water amplified the problem.

The ticket stub, free program, and pilot "trading cards" are all pretty cool souvenirs though! Overall, it was $25 well spent.

Taking photos I had some trouble with the glare off the water finally my battery dyed but I was able to salvage one photo.I purchased the tickets on line so I did not have to deal with the will call line but I didn't get a souvenir ticket stub "dammit".

That would be the only thing holding me back from going to the South Embarcadero viewing area next year (assuming it comes back). The water will have more glare during the final rounds compared to North Embarcadero.

I went on friday and was on the south side. I had a great time and will for sure go back next year. I haven't uploaded my pics to the computer yet but just like everyone said the sun was terrible. If you get the chance I would definately recommend going to one.
They had a big demonstration by the navy and coast guard and I was wondering if they do something similar at all the races or this was just something special

I think that was special because this race was part of Fleet Week (which takes place over a month) and San Diego is a big Navy/USCG town.

Haha...they were talking with us for a while before the races started and we were outside the gates  Wink

Personally I would love to spend the extra money for the "box seats" that they have. Yeah, I know its expensive as hell, but that would be incredible!
