EK To Double Sri Lankan's Fleet; Looking At A321

According to its president Tim Clark, Emirates seeks to double Sri Lankan Airlines' fleet within the next five years. The A321 is being evaluated as a replacement for UL's A320s. The Dubai-based airline has a 43-percent stake in the Sri Lankan carrier.

Will be interesting to see what happens - probably there are also plans to transfer current EK planes or those on order to UL?

Is this an excuse for finding a good way to dump off older aircraft when all those new planes start coming in? I know they are talking A321s right now...we'll have to see how long till it turns into A330s, and A340s...

Can UL really have a much larger fleet for where they are and the political instabilities of the region?

EK wouldn't have any problems with finding takers for its A332s, A343s or B772s, it doesn't need UL for that. Though, transferring A332s or A343s to UL may be an uncomplicated option to expand the widebody fleet - considering UL's A332s have similar specifications and cabins.

The ongoing conflict on the island is definitely hindering UL's growth. However the airline has been profitable for the last five years (and seven of the nine years since its privatisation) which is quite remarkable, considering the political events in the past years. There's lots of potential - India alone is a lucrative market. UL is the most frequent foreign carrier into the country.
