Hi All-
The previous thread on this has been archived, so I'm starting a new one. The Shuttle America E170 (N862RW) that had the runway excursion this past February has received its new barrel section and the nose has either been repaired or replaced, and is "headless'' no more! Although I am told that Republic Holdings has officially written this plane off, the rebuild is going strong and the plane should be airborne again by year-end.
(Fair warning...this is all on another site.) A search for N268RW will get you quite a few pics of this bird in various stages, including the accident itself.

I am glad to see that the rumor running around with employees at CLE was just a rumor...she will get fixed. I had the opportunity to visit this aircraft in the Air Services hangar (see link), and talk to the mechanics, prior to hearing this rumor.
According to the mechanics, she was supposed to fly by the end of this month (September), but it might be later...

What they may have done is swapped it out with another airplane from the leasing company or whoever they got the airplane from. Obviously the insurance company thought otherwise to repair it than scrap it. I'd actually like to see what the bill was to fix it as opposed to just scrap it and salvage the parts on the plane.

So it will be sold off by the insurance company to another carrier? Glad to see she'll take to the skies once more.

Yes, it's nice to see that such a young aircraft isn't going to go to waste. And I'm glad they keep their doors open there too!

Interesting, thanks for the update.
There was recently a thread concerning the Aerorepublica (COPA) E195 that also had significant damage to the front part of its fuselage when it ran off the runway in a landing incident......I wonder if this airplane can also be saved with a ""nose job""?

It would appear the technology is there, perhaps it's more a matter of funding. Of course almost anything can be rebuilt with enough money.

This is not correct. 862 will be flying for Republic again at some point within the next 30-45 days.
Also, this aircraft isnt leased by RAH, it's owned.

Forgive me if I'm wrong, but I thought I read somewhere on here that DL's EMB-170s were being replaced with 175s?

That is correct as some if not all of the 170's will go to the UA operation.

I think the issue there is the saltwater corrosion it suffered while it was sitting in the water.

Interesting...Proof positive you should not believe everything you read...and this was in a major airline magazine. Granted, in retrospect it only said "written off," but then I heard from an "insider" that this was the case and it seemed to confirm it.
Thanks for the update... (But then again...how do I know YOU are right! LOL)

Didn't that one end up in salt water for a few days? Salt water and metal aren't exactly the best of friends... I hear that salt water damage will write off a metal airframe quicker than anything!
Celebrating the birth of KELPkidJR on August 5, 2009 :-)

Initially, the damage to the two engines appeared more substantial then what it was, while the damage to the structure was evident immediately. There was a significant period of time where the aircraft was being evauluated and it was very much up in the air with the insurance companies. In the end, it was cheaper to repair then to replace, but another factor was the lack of availability of a replacement airframe (one was not readily available). When you consider the lost revenue side of the insurance issue, it was better to get this aircraft flying again than to wait a year for a new one.
(I realize many will say that it would not have taken Republic a year to replace the aircraft with Embraer due to thier favorable position with slots, but all aircraft Republic can get from Embraer this year are already on order. Pushing a replacement for 862 to the front of the line would have delayed a new 175 from the US program. Most of the delay to repair this airframe was waiting for the fabrication of the two nose sections in Brazil.)
Oh- and my source is about as reliable as you can get...

10 of them go to UA with Shuttle America. The other 6 E-170s will be converted to 76 seats and put into the Frontier system at Republic.

Thanks...that clears a lot up for me. And I trust your sources! It is amazing how quickly it is moving along all of the sudden. Kinda neat to watch.
