FR Will Invest On MXP And BGY

An italian newspaper is anticipating an announcement Ryanair will
make tomorrow: one billion dollars will be invested on MXP and
BGY and 12 737s will be based there (there is not any detail
on how many on them will be based at MXP, which is not in
the FR network at the moment).

Wow! Although we knew it was on the cards, they made the deal surprisingly fast! It's not only bad news for AZ, but also for easyJet, that is buidling it's base in MXP since 2 years now. Does easyJet still have "undecided" aircraft: aircraft that will be delivered soon, but aren't dedicated to a base yet?

Mamma Mia... FR is really stepping up in the Milan area!  Wow! MXP is a nice surprise, although it was long rumored they want to move in. Oh well, more flying cattle wagons in the air, and more options to fly for fun  Smile

The way I saw it, travelling to BGY was the necessary evil in order to get cheap flights with FR. If they're available at MXP, will people be more inclined to travel from there instead?

Clearly, there is some intersection. But while BGY is on the east side of Milan, MXP is on the NW side of the city. So, it's something like STN vs. LGW  Smile

Well, if they are going to fly to MXP Terminal 2 (the same as easyJet uses) it is evil as well, as you don't have easy access to the Malpensa Express. MXP T1 is more convenient for rail travel. When you want to leave MXP by rental car, it's a long drive to Milan, just like from BGY.

Besides that, I think the area provides enough traffic for both airports. Of course, both share to service of the Milano metro area. But the airports are (by highway) almost 100 km apart, and both have their "own" markets as well. Maybe some BGY flights will switch to MXP, but considering they will also expand from BGY, it shows that they also see that the city can easily have multiple airports.

I guess there will be a cost penalty if one wants to use the MXP gateway, and don't forget Milan has a big and important catchment area and some might find BGY closer than fighting themselves thru to the other side just to fly out of MXP. The only real "central" airport in Milan is LIN. So I think operating out of both MXP and BGY will work pretty well for FR if they can establish a good route and schedule network. For the company I visit in Milan it was easier for the guys to come to BGY when I arrived with 5P than when I arrived to MXP with AZ. However MXP is a much nicer place to spend your time waiting  Silly

It doesn't seem to be a done deal yet! The last sentence in Ryanairs article "Ryanair’s offer to SEA provides the potential for real growth, what happens now is in SEA’s hands.” indicates it's just a proposal, and nothing seems to be signed yet. But we might see an announcement soon, though.

It would be a terrible anti-climax in the story that's called Malpensa. A huge new terminal, projected to be one of the major hub airports for Europe, with all kinds of intercontinental flights, etc, etc... to end like a second Stansted...

For the CAT III ops for FR, I'm sure they have that certification since BGY has lot of fog in the autumn.
In MXP we are experiencing less foggy day every year, so it's not a real big problem. LIN situation would be worse.

Anyway, Sea-Aerporti Milano has to improve a lot to be able to serve FR the way they need it.

Of FR’s existing Italian cities, I could certainly see AHO; CAG; CIA (assuming good outcome from current problems); SUF; TPS or PMO or both; BDS; and BRI from MXP. Three other possibilities from FR’s existing Italian cities are PSR; TRS; and PEG. PSR is 573 KM from Milan by road and 5+ hours by train; TRS is 416 KM from Milan by road and 4.5+ hours by train; and PEG is 450 KM from Milan by road and 5+ hours by train. My gut feeling is that MXP-PSA wouldn’t operate.

I guess domestic routes would operate from both MXP and BGY, rather than exclusively from MXP. So there’d probably some route overlap.

FR already flies to 22 Italian airports. If it added MXP, that’d be 23.

Although not yet served by FR, I’d personally love to see NAP, CTA, and REG, all of which could obviously be served from MXP. And that’d mean FR would in total serve 26 Italian airports.

Some relatives of my fiancée – whom I’ll be marrying this November – were from Italy, and she looks quite Italian.

This fits into the idea that MXP will be developed into a low cost airport. MXP will have the room now that AZ is dehubbing it. LIN will once again become Milan's premium airport (except for Non European/Italian traffic, which still has to go to MXP)

LIN is becoming more and more a business and general aviation airport. the GA apron is being expanded (almost doubled) and the airline apron is so tight that they cannot add anymore flights.

LOL! Talk about reliability and dependability!  Big grin

I have been to LIN, MXP, and BGY before. I thought BGY was effective for a discount airline airport. MXP was my favourite. I went to LIN 6 or 7 years ago (from BRU), and I thought that it was at the time rather dingy and unappealing. I guess it has since been modified.
