That was one godawful-looking design. However, when I first saw the new design I thought it was a special scheme for the Salt Lake city Olympics. Did Delta run a focus group on the color scheme and decide it needed a quick update?

Management hired an outside agency to come up with that scheme and it cost them millions. I would have designed one for them for free if they had only asked the employees.

Hey DL Widget Head,

Since you work in Fleet Logistics for DL, heard any good stuff about getting some more widebodies for DL? Seems to me you guys are running a little low on widebodies given all the new int'l routes that will be opening up.

Second, can you tell me how many 737-800's DL now has on the property? I know they've been coming in at about 3 per month.

Thanks in advance.

Hey DL Widget Head,

Thanks for posting this info! Really cool! Is it me or does it seem based on Widget Head's info that Delta seems to be aggressively getting the newest livery in the fleet at a rapid pace. I would have thought only 10 planes had the new look not 86! Cool!

DL Widget Head, thanks for the interesting info. Do you have the numbers for specific variants? For example, the number or 763, 764, 733, 738 and so on... Thanks!

No new information concerning widebody procurements other than more 777's at some future date and of course more 767-300er's. It has been rumored that some 767-400's will eventually see International service. 40 737-800's have been delivered to date with A/C #3741 and #3742 due this month along with 2 more 767-400's #1814 and #1815. I'll have to get back with you regarding the exact numbers of the 737 and 767 variants.

Hard to believe they could be getting short on widebodies. They operate over 100 B767, plus the handfuls of B777, MD-11, and L-1011 they have. I would imagine they could increase some domestic frequencies with B757 and B737-800 to cover some routes if they are in a real bind, but I imagine they are covered for now.

Dear DL Widget Head,

Thanks for the summary info.

I am in Australia and have been collating this info by using the photo section on this site. A visit to LAX added a couple more aircraft in the old livery.

I have taken to calling the liveries :

N - new M - mid O - old

I have counted 51 aircraft so far in the new livery - so am
a bit behind!!.

If you have the time and inclination, could you supply the individual fleet numbers of the 86 aircraft to my email address listed in the profile.

I am a TWA fan and have now added Delta to be my #2 American airline. I will visit Atlanta in June for a couple of days to view the fleet coming and goings.

With kind thanks and regards,

Peter Spence

What I can see this means that DL has about four MD11s in the "old-old"-c/s......somebody who knows more? How long will the MD11s in the "old-old"-c/s be wearing that superb c/s?

I was told by a TWA mechanic that if a plane drastically needs a new paint job, even though the plane might be retired in a few years, they will paint it in the new scheme. TWA painted quite a few of their 727's in their new scheme, but now they are all gone. Seems like a waste of money to me, but an airline does not want to get a negative image because of one or two nasty looking planes, so I could see why a new paint job might be necessary.

DL Widget Head,

It's great that you put out some good numbers for all the jetheads on these boards, but watch the spreading of rumors....

For instance, the 764 will not see international service at Delta, it is configured solely for domestic service (no business elite) and given the current fleet rationalization climate at Delta, there is no consideration of having a subfleet of 764's for International service.

And when you think about it logically, Delta uses 763's on the thinner Int'l routes and 777's on the heavy routes.....a 764 in an Int'l configuration only provides a slight increase in capacity from a 763 and probably isn't worth the effort.

Currently there are no plans to use 767-400's on international routes but, that could very well change at some future date depending on circumstances and that was my point, it is merely a possibility. Converting a domestic 767-400 to International use could be done in a few weeks. Point in fact, most of the 767-300er's in international service now were once configured for domestic service and were thus converted. So, the option exists to use these birds in the international arena in the future should the company deem necessary.

Please do not blame Landor for the bad '97 livery. They are responsible for the old BA and the newest Varig, so they obviously have talent. I believe 40+ designs were pitched to Delta, and the Ron Allen paint scheme was picked by people no longer with the family. I just wish I could've seen the designs that went in the trash.....

Honestly.... as much as the '97 livery brings back bad memories of Allen for some DL employees, I happen to think the 777 in the interim colors looks absolutely stunning. Too bad the only way I can see the Delta 777 is by logging on to airliners.net or taking a ride out to ATL.

The new colors have grown on me, though.

To those skeptical of the 767-400 flying over the pond.... there are many intercontinental routes that management would like to use the 777 on, but there are simply not enough of them. So, at least to me, that may leave the door open for whatever capacity can be added.

Thanks for the info DL Widget Head, I thought that I had a rare pic of a 727 in the newest livery, but I guess there are 5 others. Any plans to use the 757 on the ATL-ABQ routes, or even the CVG-ABQ routes? Also, why did they discontinue the LAX-ABQ route a few years back? Thanks

Gabe

I think ABQ was lucky enough to get the 737-800's. It seems that DL is focused on the east coast short haul markets for the 757 in the near future, case in point, ORF getting 2 757 trips a day as well as MCI getting one or two. As for the pulling of the LAX route, that still baffles me. They had a high of what, 7 or 8 flights a day to LAX? From what I understand, the cargo bin was full of DL DASH, their premium cargo product. The cargo paid for the flight and them some. Anybody riding up top was pure profit. DL has done a lot of weird things to Westerns former route network.

I like the new DL livery better, but it has an awfull tail, and it could use a cheatline or something besides that plane white/silver body.

All 727's are slated for retirement by 2005 but schedule is not ironclad.

Modesto asked for a breakdown of the specific variants of DL's 767's and 737's. Here it is:

Total 737's=120
737-200=54 // 14 mainline // 40 with DL Express
737-300=26 all in mainline service
737-800=40 // 24 in mainline service // 16 DL Shuttle

Total 767's=112
767-200=15 all in mainline domestic service
767-300=85 // 36 in domestic // 49 (er's) INTL service
767-400=12 all in domestic mainline service

What's the reg mark for the M90 in the 2000 livery? We don't see them North of San Diego or Orange Co, so, I'm curious. (i'm in Oregon)

Thanks,

I kind of missed the whole Ron Allen thing at Delta. I've heard about it, but I don't know nothing about it. Would someone mind explaining exactly what happened?

Thanks!
