Transfer At JFK Question

Hey all

I have a question. Can anybody tell me if 2 hours and thirty minutes is enough time to transfer at JFK if one has to change from the UA terminal to the DL or the B6 terminal? Also, from what I understand the weather can be quite fierce in New York in winter. So should one expect heavy delays around January? I tried searching on the airport's website but couldn't find anything on minimum connecting times between different terminals.

Thanks in advance for your help!

William

Two and a half hours is fine.

If you're going to the DL terminal, I wouldn't delay getting over there - check-in and security can take a while. The B6 terminal is only an AirTrain stop away, so it won't take as long to get there, and the lines are generally shorter.

As far as delays go, the winter is actually better than the summer since you don't have the big thunderstorms blocking up the afternoon rush hour. There is more weather in winter that can really shut down the airport (snow, ice) in winter than in summer, but there's a lot less of it, so you have a greater chance of not being affected.

Hi Mir

Thanks a lot! If I were to take B6 then, would 1 hour 45 be enough, considering their terminal's proximity or would that be cutting it just a bit too fine?

Agreed. NYC is much better for winter travel for this same reason.

And to get back to the orginal point (almost)...

In July 2004, I arrived from ROC on B6 at 7:25 and left for LHR on BA at 9:00, with checked luggage. I don't recommend this for mere amateurs, of course, but with on-time flights, it worked out just fine.

You could be cutting it close with 1h45m if you have luggage and there is a delay of even a few minutes. UA does not have luggage agreements with B6, so you will have to reclaim your bags from UA and carry them over to B6.

You should be fine, assuming the flights aren't seriously delayed. Will you be checking bags?

I always give myself at least 2 hour minimum connecting time in JFK or EWR....at a minimum.

I kind of like the 3-4 hour window. Have some food, have a few drinks, check out the transfering hotties, talk up some flight crew, etc. Makes the whole thing an adventure more than a chore.

Thanks for your help guys! I think then it will have to be the DL option. Probably I'll only have hand lugguage, so I should make it with DL with 2 hours and 30 minutes.

My experience with JFK a few years ago was rather interesting. Arriving on a Comair from Savannah, I was told to go outside the terminal and follow the red/white or yellow/black construction tape that led to another terminal and my AF flight to CDG. This was late a night and the terminal was new and almost empty. I passed through security in five minutes. What is this new terminal?

AF has been going out of Terminal 1 at JFK since its inception, which was in the late 90s IIRC. So the terminal isn't exactly new, though it is the third newest terminal at the airport (was the second newest until AA's terminal opened just recently).
