United UA840 Australia-JFK Question

Hi,

This is directed at anyone, but mainly people who have flown on United 840

So I'll be flying from BNE-AKL on United 9570 and then AKL-LAX on United 9544 (Arrives Terminal 2), but when I get to LAX, I will be flying on United 840 from LAX-JFK (Departs Terminal 7). United 840 originates in MEL and goes to JFK via SYD and LAX. There is a plane change at LAX from 744 to a 752. My question is, when I get to LAX do I go through customs/immigration and then board the flight to JFK or do I change planes airside and go through customs/immigration at JFK?

Any help would be much appreciated.

You clear customs at LAX. LAX-JFK is a domestic flight.

You will also have to collect your baggage after passing through immigration, carry it through customs, and then place it on a transfer belt (provided it's been checked through to JFK).

My guess is they are operated by Air New Zealand.... due to the fact that they say they arrive in T2 in LAX and they fly the AKL-LAX route.

All are done in LAX. At JFK its a simple pickup and go out once your bag has arrived. You will clear customs at T2 in LAX and then walk or take a shuttle bus to T7 (United) to get on UA 840.

Hmmm... you probably would have been better off just booking yourself on UA840 from Sydney. Same number of stops (you connect on DJ) but if there is a delay etc its not a problem....and you don't have to change terminals then.

Yes there is a change of aircraft. The 744 terminates in LAX and you're on a p.s configured 752 to new york.

Be careful. I took Anz to LAX years ago to connect to UA to IAD, and as NZ was late, and delays in customs, i missed the flight and got stuck on stand-by most of the day. UA would probably rebook you or speed things up (let you jump the que) if you took them all the way... and ditto for QF for the QF108 to JFK (they ask you to step out of the line and go to the front of customs if you're continuing on to JFK on QF)

You are correct there my friend. UA don't serve BNE, and I doubt if they will ever fly any services into here, unless of course, something freakish happens. UA don't even serve AKL, although I do belive they used to. UA and NZ are both in Star Alliance, and have a code share agreement, which means UA can put their flight numbers on NZ flights from the United States (LAX only as that is NZ's only service in America), YVR being the other North American destination.

You are right. I am flying on NZ. But I chose the UA codeshare option, so I could still earn Mileage Plus points. Also, I don't think I could handle 13 hours on a plane with no personal AVOD TV, so I choose NZ.

NZ also operates flights into SFO, in addition to LAX and YVR. I had the option of connecting through SFO, but I choose to go through LAX so I could fly on the 747.

Just make sure that your bags are checked through to JFK, that way you can just drop them on the transfer belt after clearing customs...

You would still have earned Milage Plus points even without any code sharing as you do on ALL NZ flights (together with all flights flown by Star Alliance carriers). It doesn't matter whether there are code sharing or not.


....however the AVOD issue is a resonably point

I think if NZ 006 its a 777 for the next month or 2. After that all the 2 LAX flights are 744 and 763 the island hopper. Currently only NZ 001/2 are 744 but that changes soon.

If you are flying to LAX Terminal 2 on NZ, then you will have to take a shuttlebus between Term 2 and Term 7. Don't walk.. It's too far!

Also, if you're flying coach on UA between LAX and JFK prepare for a small shock - you'll have to pay for your own food in cash because there's a charge for food and alcoholic beverages. It doesn't matter that you're flying international from New Zealand. You can usually choose a sandwich or a salad. The inflight magazine has a menu and photos of the food choices. The UA 757 you'll be flying on is the PS service flight, which usually offers more space with Economy plus.

Also, if you select channel 9 audio in your seat, you'll be able to hear the communications between the pilots and the control tower - not just on your flight but those of other flights preparing for taxi and takeoff - it's pretty interesting.

If you get a seat on the left side of the plane, you may also be lucky enough to get a view of downtown Los Angeles during ascent, and the later into the flight the Grand Canyon.

On your return flight from JFK to LAX, if you get a seat on the right side, you'll be able to see Manhattan on the ascent (if the weather is clear and the plane takes off from the correct runway).

At LAX, UA has their own FIS facility at Terminal 6. You will arrive from SYD at Terminal 6 and then depending upon which terminal UA uses for the ps flights LAX-JFK (likely 6 or 7), you would exit the FIS facility, go to the baggage recheck facility there and check the monitor for your gate. Any 60 series gate is Terminal 6, any 70 series gate is Terminal 7. Terminal 8 is reserved for 737 operations and the likelihood that any ps flight would depart from there is slim to none (but not impossible). Once you leave the FIS facility (after you have rechecked your bag...and this is important, recheck your bag outside the FIS facility BEFORE you leave T-6) it is about a 5 minute walk to T7 and, depending upon the security backup, about a 30 minute trip from the FIS facility to the gate.

Using UA from AUS to JFK is a good choice if you must transit LAX, since everything is very close (and LAX is HUGE).
