I dropped off my sister at LAX yesterday to catch a Virgin Atlantic flight to LHR. In the same terminal (Terminal 2), I saw two Air New Zealand flights boarding passengers.
One was Flight #2 with service to LHR. The other was flight #18 to Frankfurt. When did Air New Zealand start flying LAX-FRA? I had never even heard of this service! It seems as if Air New Zealand is trying an interesting approach to supplying transatlantic flights for Americans, first with LAX-LHR, and now with LAX-FRA. Maybe LAX-CDG will be next??? (the flights operate with 747-400s).
I wonder how fellow star alliance member Lufthansa feels about the Frankfurt service???

Air NZ launched the FRA service way back in 1987 with a weekly service, increasing to three sometime in the mid 90s(2 via LAX, one via operating AKL-LAX-FRA-LHR-LAX-AKL), and then back to two(both via LAX, and recently Fiji was added as a stopover as well) sometime shortly afterwards. These flights were marketed for German travellers, not at the US market. They will actually be ending this service shortly in favour of a code share with fellow Star Partner, Lufthansa, which will offer a daiy service via LAX. They do still have a dailyl codeshare via SIN as well. Air NZ have stated that in the long term, 2 weekly filghts to Europe do not make sense and they are better off with this codeshare arrangement.

AirNZ operated this flight twice weekly, Thursday and Friday.
They were operated by the 744 and the flight was 95% of the time full. They marketed in NZ and Germany. Those were the Passengers they were trying to attract and they did very well in doing so.
The flight came in at the same time as other AirNZ flights which were later going on to RAR, PPT, APW and HNL.
The route was AKL-NAN-LAX-FRA. And on the Thursday flight returning it would go:

They are dropping this service in order to codeshare with Luthansa. They will be Codesharing with Luthansa back to AKL on their aircrafts.
The thing i donot understand is why they will give up such a profitable route like this one. It has been rumored At AirNZ that they will be starting up new routes to three asian destinations from AKL.

Yes, Air NZ(along with Ansett and QF) are looking at Seoul again, once the new Inchon Airport is up and runing sometime this year. My guess is that NZ will fly there and codeshare with AN, probably routing via SYD/BNE.

AirNZ have no reason to look at Europe. They are consentrating on the South Pacific and Asia at the moment. Ansett will fly to Europe in the near future for AirNZ.
I think that AirNZ will fly back to SEL using there own aircraft operating out of AKL and Ansett will operate out of BNE/SYD. Most likely Sydney.
The thing is AirNZ is becoming a very greedy airline now and they want money. Thus creating two main hubs for each airline,
AKL/LHR/LAX is operated by AirNZ and SYD/MEL/BNE/PER are operated by Ansett.
This will give AirNZ a big advantage over Qantas as they are operating out of two major tourist destinations.
My guess is in the near future Ansett will operate all flights to Europe, USA, Asia and South America out of Australia and AirNZ operate out of Auckland to Europe, Asia, USA, South Pacific and Australia.
