For all you riddle kids (and non-riddle fokes in Daytona):

Delta has "announced" that they are bringing multiple 757s to DAB for the Daytona 500 in February. And by "announce" I mean they are currently on the schedule on their website. And we all know that schedules are "subject to change". So that being said, here it is at the moment:

2/13, 2/14, 2/15: Two 757 turn-arounds (In times are 1248 and 1633)
2/16: Just one 757 turn-around (In at 1248)
2/17 (Race day): One 757 overnight (In at 1948)
2/18: Overnight 757 departs 0730; Four 757 turn-arounds (In times are 0949, 1118, 1248, 1633)
2/19: Two 757 turn-arounds (In times are 1118 and 1448)

Hopefully a majority of them will be the new colors, because by that time a majority should be painted.

Among all the 757s are MD-88s and a CRJ-700 here and there.

I don't think this will change too much, because it's the 50th anniversary of the race, so these planes should be easily sold out by that time (at least one way, depending on before or after the race).

Enjoy

One of these days DAB will get a scheduled 757. When i worked at DAB 2-3 years ago, they almost got one scheduled for a few weeks during the peak season. Now that FL is there i wouldnt be suprised if they got a 757 on one of the ATL flights Feb-April. I was fortunate enough to have an equipt sub to a 757 on a flight to DAB once a couple years ago.

An additional note.... they must ahve had some SERIOUS advance bookings already because the extra race flights typically did nto get loaded in until December or even january sometimes and historically it has only been 3x 738 or MD88 for the monday after only. I did nto realize it was the 50th Daytona 500 but if thats the case im sure there will be a bunch of interesting aircraft there at the airport.

that was always a fun time to work airport ops at DAB (rest of the time, not so much!)

Its good to see Delta adding capacity at the time. I was also playing with the schedules this morning and noticed that there will be three extra destinations that weekend as well, as far as I can find.

Charlotte
From CLT: DL 9705 0900-1035 MD88 Th/Fr
To CLT: DL 9706 1030-1200 MD88 Mo

LaGuardia
From LGA: DL 9703 1029-1319 MD88 Th/Fr/Mo
To LGA: DL 9704 1436-1531 MD88 Th/Fr/Mo

Cincinnati
From CVG: DL 5537 0930-1146 CR7 Th/Fr/Mo
To CVG: DL 5542 1230-1445 CR7 Th/Fr/Mo

I did notice the Charlotte one. That's actually a charter, because it's a 9xxx flight number, but must be open to the public. They know a lot of people from SC want to see the race.

I also saw the CVG one, which is Comair :-|

Didn't know about the LGA one, thanks for the info! I'll be sure to look for it.

I don't believe that's an accurate statement. It's my understanding the fleet is being repainted as it comes in for it's heavy checks.

LGA and CVG have had flights during previous peak times (LGA was over the holidays, and CVG should still actually be there because they filled it!) but the CLT is interesting, i know CLT is a huge racing city so it makes sense, Usairways' loss is Delta's gain! I wonder what CO or FL will do, plus im sure there will be some charters. Some wide bodies would be nice. Up to 2002, some people from CLT always chartered a DL 763 but it hasnt been done since then.

The flights are open for sale on Delta's website, and are $597 for the roundtrip.

LGA is also open for sale, and it's $412 roundtrip for passengers originating in New York.

However, for the Riddle students or DAB residents looking to escape to New York for that weekend, leaving DAB on Thursday or Friday and returning that Monday on those flights is $232. Hmmm...I wonder what my class schedule is going to be...

For those interested in the story behind the CLT charters im pretty sure i know the reason they went away, my speculation at least....

2002 and years prior they chartered the 763

2003 they went cheap and decided to go with a pace 737-200.... i was PISSED because the 1st race that i worked at the airport and there would be no 763. Well that year there was a snow/ice storm htting the carolinas so the flight got in late. The people go over to the race track, they get some laps in, then it rains, but they get enough laps in where they ended up calling the race over. The passengers come back to the airport, and their pace 732 is stuck in the snowstorm in a believe RDU. There were about 110 drunk racefans in the concourse at DAB and by the end of the night the airport was TRASHED! The pace 732 didnt end up getting there until like 3-4 am. So the folks that paid for the charter flight, got to the race late, had the race end early, then had to wait 10 hrs for their return flight, and they hadnt had a CLT race passenger charter since.....

Whoops...I forgot about the taxes.

I definitely noticed that $1060 Atlanta fare too. AirTran has flights available from ATL for about $530 that weekend. Thats a steal!

That was just a quick estimate. I was going on DL Livery List - September 07 (by QFATWA Sep 5 2007 in Civil Aviation) seeing that the 757s were majority of the fleet getting painted ASAP. But seeing that there are 125 of them, I guess a majority of them won't be done by then. But a good amount should be. We'll see when they get here.

I was going to include the fares, but you did it for me. so thanks! Insane prices - but people WILL pay them.

The Daytona 500 pretty much sells out no matter what anniversary of the race it is. I doubt it being the 50th will bring any more fans than the 49th, etc, unless Daytona adds seats at the track this off season.

I'm sure they do, but Charlotte is in NC.

Yea it always sells out...but the 50th anniversary will surely have a more affluent attendance, meaning more aviation in some form or another.

In recent years Delta has also operated Daytona 500-related flights in/out of St. Augustine (SGJ) with 737-800s.

I dont believe those were Daytona 500 related, (though i can only speak for 2002-2004), though SGJ did get them for the super bowl and sometimes for the big golfing events.

While this subject was brought up, does anyone have any kind of load factor numbers for DL or FL? Ever since United Express pulled out I have secretly been hoping for someone else to come in. Being only an hour from Orlando - DAB would appear to be the perfect reliever and I know for a fact that the city was trying to "make a deal" with another airline to get them to provide service, but obviously none yet. Us Riddle folks can only hope - how about something to NY??

go to www.flydaytonafirst.com and click statistics and reports and they show all the pax statistics and load factors (all of which are very high)

As for something to NY... they have it with CO-EWR, though i think a sat only LGA on DL would do good too... weekdays its not worth the slot.

As RL757PVD kind of said, I was refering to the seats on the flights, not the seats in the stadium. Of course the race will be sold out! Although seats sold on flights do relate to seats sold at the race. But it still just seems that more people will be traveling to Daytona for this extra special event.
