This article in Saturday's Globe & Mail gives you a good sense of what is likely to happen. They are pinning their hopes on the China deal. If it works out, C-Series will go; if not, bye-bye-Bombardier in the aviation business.

Fasten your seatbelts

From Saturday's Globe and Mail

BEIJING, MONTREAL — Jianwei Zhang, the soft-spoken engineer who spearheads Bombardier Inc.'s growth drive in China, has some subtle tactics for courting the powerful bureaucrats who make the decisions at the state industries here.

Unlike many foreign investors, he never hires agents or intermediaries to do the lobbying for him. Nor does he ride in chauffeur-driven limousines to the government offices in Beijing where the big contracts are settled. Instead, he takes ordinary local taxis – a matter of some astonishment for the officials who meet him.

In the entire business, or just the airliner business? If I'm not mistaken, BBD has a fairly successful business jet program.

I'd take the awe of understanding over the awe of ignorance any day.

You're right. I'm talking about the airliner business. Business jets and trains are doing well. So are the Q400, CRJ705/900 lines -- but that's not enough to keep them profitable for much longer. They need the C-series

Good point -- but they are ALL over there trying to work deals, including Embraer. Like it or not, China is going to drive the business over the next 20 years and no one can afford to be out of that picture.

Well, P&W is pushing a GTF for the C-Series and their test engine should start up next month. That has been one of the technical challenges for the C-Series program.

Tom.

Oh, there is no doubt about that. But there is a difference beween taking extra money and taking your life savings to the casino. If the business itself depends on deals with China, that is a very, very bad place to be. Countless western companies have been burned doing business there, thus my comment.
