Hello everyone!
I just read on one of the Latvian forums (in Russian) that BT is adding new routes this winter with OUL and TAS being brand new destinations for BT. Someone also mentioned that the airline is leasing two (2) B767 aircraft for TAS flights. Does anyone have any info on this as I haven't been able to find anything on the subject. They mentioned that the aircraft are coming from Nigeria.
Leo.
P.S, I'm still trying to picture B767 in BT's colors.

Quoting Vasu (Reply 2): Isn't a Latvian company providing 767s for Virgin Nigeria...?
I wasn't aware of any Latvian airlines operating a 767. I was under the impression that HY's TAS-RIX-JFK-RIX-TAS was the only 767 operations in RIX.
Leo.

Who knows, may be Air Baltic will start codesharing with Uzbekistan and will fly JFK and TAS on its own metal so that Uzbekistan can use the aircrafts for other routes ? For the RIX-JFK sector it would make perfectly sense.

here you can see english version of BT press release: http://www.airbaltic.com/public/31391.html As far as I can see from BT webpage and booking engine flight schedule is not published and tickets cannot be purchased on TAS flight.
I just read on one of the Latvian forums (in Russian) that BT is adding new routes this winter with OUL and TAS being brand new destinations for BT.
...You mean Oulu in Northern-Finland? That would be something new. Oulu is an university town and high tech center, with 130,000 inhabitants. OUL is the second airport in Finland with around 850,000 passengers 2006, but they have had very little international traffic, mainly just holiday charters lately.
I'm curious to know what kind of business plan BT would have for the OUL route.
P.S Ok, it's official now, thanks for the press info link.

City breaks to Riga? Migration traffic to Oulu? (does Finland have a considerable Latvian population since the EU entry of Latvia?) What kind of traffic is Ryanair carrying on TMP-RIX? Quite some city-breakers I guess?
BT will fly the route 3-weekly with F50 equipment.
TAS is loaded 2-weekly in the winter schedule, outbound Tue, Fri; return Wed-Sat. The flight will be overnight eastbound, leaving Riga at 22:45 and arriving in Tashkent 06:45. Return is scheduled 07:30-09:55. A 737-500 is mentioned in the Schedule.
I don't think they'd acquire a 767 just for a 2-weekly flight.

Must be the city breaks then, like with TMP-RIX. Not much Latvian immigrants in Finland, Estonian more so.
Oulu is rather far up north, around one hour flight from HEL, so RIX-OUL something like 1h 45min?
P.S Checked: RIX-OUL 2h 20min

That TAS flight is going to be a long one, even longer than the TLV service. Looking at the great circle planner it will be at least 4.5 hrs and that is straight line, people will not be queing up to fly this one (from a pilots perspective). I would like to do it once, but these overnight return flights mixed in with normal day ops etc mean the body does not know when to sleep lol
BT flights are interchangable when it comes to the 737 fleet, can be either 500 or 300 depending on loading. I hazard a guess that we won´t be seeing the 18.5K birds on this route.
Regarding any 767's, please also remember that BT is part of the SAS group and any expansion into the long haul market would be watched closely by big brother. BT certainly would not be getting 767´s for the TAS route.

Yes 18.5K refers to the thrust rating, anything around 3hrs in length with around 100 or so pax and you are already looking to improve the performance for takeoff, either improved climb or bleeds off take-off.
The 500´s are a mix of 18.5 and 20K´s, whilst the 300´s are 22K´s.

Do you know which ones have what trust rating?
737-500s:
YL-BBA ex Braathens - (I have done 4 legs on this bird)
YL-BBD and BBE ex AF
YL-BBF, - BBG and -BBH are ex Aer Lingus
YL-BBM, -BBN and -BBP are ex United
737-300s
YL-BBK, -BBL are ex easyJet (and ex SkyEurope) and have winglets

BT also have YL-BBQ ex-United and Canjet.
YL-BBA / D / E - 18.5K
YL-BBF / G / H / M / N / P / Q - 20K
D and E are very nice planes with good levels of equipment, from a flying perspective you can not beat K and L as they have the top equipment for the period installed. Easyjet spared no expense.

Out of interest, what does this mean? What is "equipment"?

They have a nice flightdeck setup with some elements found in NG´s and have acars etc just in nice condition really.

I asked around and it appears that BT are indeed looking for larger aircraft. However from what I have learned they are looking for one B757 or B767, but for charter reasons, not for scheduled flights... at least not for the time being...

As per last Winter BT will be going down to Egypt and that is a long trek in the 737 classics ( in terms of performance). Again a route I would like to try once, but 12hrs flight time in one day is enough for anyone.
It would be great to see the 757/767 enter the fleet, but surely it is too much of an expensive option for only one to be leased and would not justify some of the costs involved. I would guess that if BT went down this route there would certainly be a second aircraft involved.
