New Frankfurt Airport?

I just read in a german newspaper (Frankfurter Rundschau), that the air traffic controller and the pilot union "Cockpit" are suggesting to build a complete new airport rather then building a new runway at the existing airport. Because when the new runway will be ready (2006) the airport will have reached once again at his capacity.
I think they just find the solution with the northwest runway not that good. They are prefering a southern variante with two runways which would be more efficient.
Any comments on that matter?

hmmm...when will the new airport be ready? And what´s with the current capacity-problems until that?

-> The 4th runway has to be built!

Hello,

This wouldn't be the best solution for Lufthansa, as they would have to share their operations.

For other airlines like Air France at Paris, this is less embarassing as Orly (ORY) has mainly O&D flights to French West Indies and domestic destinations.
But for Lufthansa this would likely be a greater problem.

in my eyes, the northwest airline variant is silly.
once again it´s just a runway for one thing, this time just for landings. the runway west can only be used as take-off runway. so actually fra would have three runway, and not four, because two of these days are only run for departures or arrivals.
they want to have the new runway ready by 2006 when germany hosts the soccer world championship.
i don´t know where they could build a 2nd airport which i doubt was being suggested. lufthansa is strictly against split operations. regarding the nightflight restrictions at fra, lufthansa was asked to move it´s cargo services to hahn airport, which is about 90 mnutes car drive away. and you´re absolutely right, because lufthansa heavily relies on the belly space of the main and condor fleets, so and moving cargo from one airport to the other doesn´t make sense.
i totally agree that the variant, which would see frankfurt build one or two southern runways, parallel to the existing east/west runways, seems to make more sense. but there are many people living close to the airport which are not getting sick of complaining about the airport expansion.
personally, i´d love to the see fra build to the additional runways to the south, which would give fra 4 parallel runways, and because of their distances, allowing for simultaneous departures and arrivals, heavily boosting fra´s capacity. in addition, between both runway systems one could easily build one or two big terminals to allow future growth well into the next decades, although the cargo site would have to be moved to some other place but that´s just a small price to be paid.
if the authorities would have chosen that variant frankfurt could easily become a major competitor to heathrow because of its nature as star alliance hub and could leave charles de gaulle and amsterdam well behind.

regards
daniel

Hello,

Would anyone have some information about Hahn Airport please?

SkyTeam Cargo uses this airport as a hub. There are already Air France Cargos 747-200Fs and they expect KAL Cargo to land with their own aircraft there in the future.

Hahn Airport is about 120 km west of Frankfurt.

From 1953 until 1993 Hahn airport was known as Hahn Airbase. It was a US Air Force Base. It was turned back to the German government in 1993. I believe the long term parking lot is the old military exchange parking lot. (Parking is also free)

RyanAir operates flights to London from Hahn.

Hahn Airport has a website at:

In my opinion (LH and FAG also!!) it would be the best solution for FRA to build one or two southern runways   . Otherwise the airport would face the same capacity problems it has now, in the year 2006. There are also plans to build a third terminal in the area south of the two existing runways. (where the Rhein Main Air Base and Cargo City Sued is located right now).

The new airport should be located either in Alzey,Rhineland-Palatinate or in the area of Wetterau north of Frankfurt (thats what the newspaper wrote).
