Some interesting developments:

According to the newspaper Malta Today FR was originally interested in serving Malta from Trapani (TPS) in Sicily, close to Palermo (PMO). However, the request was turned down, and FR was instead offered Bari. Most probably, the fact that KM flies into PMO during the summer schedule has something to do with FR being denied its request. Ryanair considered flying on the MLA-BRI route, and then dropped that idea in favour of a service between Malta and Forli' (near Bologna). This route has now been shelved, and as reported earlier, Malta-Treviso takes off around mid-December.

In other article, Malta Today reports that the Malta Tourism Authority is in talks with the Spanish LCC Vueling for routes from Malta to Spain and France. It's interesting to note that while VY has been struggling as of late with a falling share price and mounting losses, the Malta Today article describes Vueling as "one of Spain’s more successful budget airlines"! How typical of the media!

A bit of speculation from my part:
I think that potential FR destinations from Malta include Gothenburg, Malmo, Billund, Madrid, Palma de Mallorca, Porto, Lisbon (a city that's not on FR's route map just yet), and perhaps Nice, Thessaloniki (which would be FR's 1st destination in Greece), Bergamo and a destination in Poland.

I really don't know if a Ryanair invasion would be good for the island. If Ryanair is allowed to fly everywhere it wants, that would be very harmful to Air Malta and all other carriers there. There is already a big dispute about the Bologna and Scandinavia routes. Air Malta is threatening to pull out of Scandinavia next summer if FR is allowed to start serving Stockholm. Air Malta got the Bologna route instead of FR. FR is threatening to pull out completely of Malta if it is not given the right to serve Bologna.

For me something is not clear : I thought any airline could start any route in Europe so what's preventing FR from starting the routes it want?

If Ryanair leaves the island it wouldn't be such a tragedy. All the routes it serves are subsidised so the public is still paying for these services!

I am not aware of any disputes over any routes. Then again, some people cannot refrain from being dramatic and dramatise everything - how pathetic and boring! Yes, both KM and FR wanted to operate to the Bologna region and a compromise (KM to BLQ, FR to Treviso) was reached to the satisfaction of all concerned. The authorities have so far done a great job in managing the arrival of low cost carriers, and I have no reason to doubt that this will stop continuing to be so.

Air Malta only flies to ARN and OSL twice weekly and the two destinations are often combined in one flight. On top of that, there are times when either or both cities are not served at all during quieter periods of the year. Any Air Malta suspension of services to Scandinavia will only help FR to obtain more routes and frequencies to the region, most probably with the great success. Should FR quit MLA, although quite unlikely, as mentioned above, it wouldn't be a big deal either: no subsidies would be forked out to FR from taxpayers' moneys. This would certainly delight Air Malta.

Any EU airline can operate anywhere within the EU. However, FR, afaik, only operates a route if there's an incentive package on offer in return for the service provided.

I, for one, and many Maltese-born Maltese people with Maltese blood running through their veins would be much happier with an invasion by Ryanair and any other airlines wishing to operate to MLA, than by an invasion of "irregular" and whatever immigrants arriving at Malta expecting the authorities to provide them with everything for free without contributing a cent to the economy.  wink

Okey thank you for the answer.

Maybe when MLAs is ready to handle the A380 after the rebuild we can see the EK A380s.

So you will see the LH A380s. Nice.
