I'm in Rosslyn right now (about 7pm EST), and out of natural habit,
looked up towards the sky because I was hearing a large jet about
to fly overhead.

It sounded like a 727 or 732, which are not aloud to fly out of DCA
anymore. Then I saw 2 fighter jets on a low northward approach,
as if taking off from DCA.

Anyone out there now what is up with that. Was there a fighter escort
into DCA?? It just seemed very out of the ordinary.

On the radio yesterday they announced that NORAD was conducting tests over the DC area. The tests are to see if response times have improved since 9/11 for scrambling armed forces into the area. The announcement said that there would be numorous F-16s in the area, as well as Coast Guard choppers.

I go to Georgetown and there have been some sick movements over the area. On Thursday I saw F18s goign up and down the river and pretty much every type of chopper that the military has.

Highlight ever though was last year when they had the air parade up the river for the potomac for the opening of the air force memorial. B2 at about 500 ft was unreal

Haha, I heard a loud noise around that time and assumed it was an NW DC-9...Didn't bother to look out the window. I did see a large number of choppers heading north near the Pentagon about two days ago and heard some fighter aircraft as well.

Really, why is that?

I thought the reason because that most airline that operates out of DCA phased them out.

Noise compliance probably. Maybe not worth converting them to Stage 3 or whatever the latest requirement is.

Also, it isn't uncommon to see F-16's or F/A-18's do flyovers of Arlington Cemetary for burials.
