Why hasn't B6 made MCO a hub they have alot of flights daily and I know they can make good money. People from out west I know would love to come to Orlando instead of going to FLL and drive 3 or 4 hours they can come directly to orlando and the addition of going to more ny airports is great also i was on the first flight from MCO to SWF december 19th and I have used it since. It is always full, that was off topic but just wanted to add that part in there. but like I was talking about they need some flights out west from Orlando B6 would benefit alot atleast I think so. The only thing i can think about right now is gates they wouldnt have enough of them to support all the flights since the area they are in is mostly ran by airtran and southwest. What do you guys think? I am knew to this so i have alot of questions that i have always wanted to ask.

From what I have read on this forum it sounds like they may be doing some major expansion at MCO. Supposed to be some big announcement next month.

DL and WN have a huge presence at MCO. Why enter the battle in a very low yield market? FLL and MCO are geographically so close to each other that they would be competing against themselves and would probably make for less efficient use of aircraft.

DL used to have a large presence at MCO, they still do but are behind FL, WN and B6. FL just took over 9 former DL gates, I believe FL is now MCO's largest carrier.

And how many years have we been hearing this?

I don't think jetBlue should concentrate efforts on Orlando, which is already saturated with other airlines.

What cities would they connect to after the flights arrive from the north and the west. The other Florida cities? They already have their own low yield non-stops.

It's WN, DL, and FL in that order.

The Miami area in general is much higher-yielding than the Orlando area is. B6 can probably make good money with a hub in MCO, but they can probably make better money building up ops out of FLL and/or MIA.

Exactly. MCO is a much more tourist driven market than is MIA/FLL. You take away Disney World and Universal and Orlando is nothing. Their market would be smaller than TPA for sure. MCO is well covered for a market its size out west and of course the bread and butter for Florida cities, the northeast markets (BOS,PVD,BDL,JFK,EWR,LGA,PHL,PIT,CLE,BWI,IAD,DCA, etc) are all well covered.

I'm not trying to insult anyone here, but when I read statements like that I wonder if folks really know what Yield means.

Yield is basically the revenue per revenue passenger mile.

Easiest, down-and-dirty method to calculate it is to divide average fare by the distance.

South Florida is not a higher yielding market than Orlando. In fact, in general, the opposite is true. Orlando is a higher yielding market than South Florida.

When it comes to South Florida, travelers in and out of Miami generate a higher yield than those flying in or out of Ft Lauderdale. By the same token, the lower fares (hence lower yield) in and out of Fort Lauderdale tend to generate more passenger traffic in any given market.

A couple of quick examples of this are the Florida instrastate routes: FLL-TPA generates an average of 1022 pax per day at a 49 cent yield whereas MIA-TPA only generates an average of 284 psgrs per day. FLL-JAX generates 774 pax/day at a 30 cent yield while MIA-JAX only generates 107 pax/day at a 37 cent yield. And MCO-FLL generates an average of 467 pax/day at a yield of 55 cents while MCO-MIA is just 233 pax/day at a 71 cent yield.

Here's the data:

CITY /// DISTANCE /// PSGRS PER DAY /// AVG FARE /// YIELD /// LGST CARRIER IN MARKET /// MKT SHARE

In many cases, Orlando to a certain destination has a higher yield than either Miami or FLL to that destination.

HOWEVER, there are quite a few where Miami to a destination has a higher yield than Orlando to that same destination, and Fort lauderdale is the lowest of all 3.

There are a few where Orlando is the lowest yielding market - but certainly not "most".

I might have time later to do some statistical analysis. Suffice it to say.....South Florida is not higher yielding as a generalized rule in any way, shape, or form.

Exactly. MCO is a much more tourist driven market than is MIA/FLL.

different kind of tourist too, in many cases. I can think of no destination which would have a lower yield than a theme park with a runway.

It's a value airline mecca at MCO... WN, FL, and DL carrying folks who don't care for value airlines... a little different than AA dominated MIA or DL heavy FLL.

B6 needs something clever and new, MCO just isn't it.

Surprisingly enough, Orlando has 2 million residents and a sizeable non-tourism business sector.

- Second largest convention city after Las Vegas = business pax who are not looking for basement fare

- Major engineering/tech firms with major presence and often collaboration with the Univ of Central Florida: Siemens, Harris Corp., Northrop Grumman/Westinghouse, Veritas Software, L-3, Seagate Technologies, Sonalysts, BAE, Aegis Tech., GE, HP, AT&T, Boeing, Raytheon, and a huge Lockheed-Martin facility.

- Here's the list of all the firms based just right around UCF: http://www.cfrp.org/tenants.html

- Orlando is, I believe, the country's largest cluster of computer simulation and modeling including the US Army Simulations Command and the Naval Air Warfare Center Training Systems Div. along with some of the above companies. This based largely around UCF, which has the nation's only College of Optics and Photonics, which is doing cutting edge laser research as well as, I understand, developing new landmine detection technology.

- Electronic Arts/Tiburon in Maitland, as well as the UCF Florida Interactive Entertainment Academy, which researches and develops software and video game techniques

- Florida Hospital, which has the nation's top ranked brain attack center and is regularly ranked as top hospital in general. The Winnie Palmer Hospital for Women and Babies at Orlando Regional. Nemours is to be building a children's hospital plus the new VA hospital.

- The city is developing a biotech cluster around a new VA hospital and the new UCF medical school.

- HQ or major office in Orlando: AAA, AirTran, Bank of America, Campus Crusade for Christ, Collins Industries, Darden Restaurants, Electronic Arts, Gaylord Entertainment, Hard Rock Cafe, Hewitt Associates, Hughes Supply, Harcourt Publishers, Lockheed Martin, Loews Hotels, Luctor Intl., Ocwen Federal, Oracle, Planet Hollywood, Ruth's Chris Steakhouse, Scholastic, Siemens, SunTrust, Symantec, T.G Lee Dairy, Tupperware, The Golf Channel, Walt Disney Corp.

- It's worth nothing that while the tourists produce low yields, Disney and hotel executives/consultants etc. do not.

- Now...is Orlando over-serviced based on its population? Absolutely. But there is a significant business population based in Orlando that can be higher-yielding, which is why LH has added a flight with plenty of C/J. Orlando is now after AF for a flight to CDG. This is also why I continually complain about FL not doing more to establish itself as Orlando's airline of choice for origin passengers.

Their market would be smaller than TPA for sure. MCO is well covered for a market its size

As already stated....Orlando's population is almost the same as Tampa, but is growing faster. The population catchment area for MCO is 5x as large as TPAs. Although MCOs yields are not as high as NYC, LAX, ORD or MIA. The cost of doing business at those airports is sometimes 10x more than MCO. Lower yields, low costs, high passenger count equals profit.

MCO has much room for growth. Well covered?? not even close. The average load factor at MCO is in the high 70s and during some parts of the year in the high 80s. Many flights to MCO consistently run load factors in the high 80s and mid 90s, showing room for growth. There are also many airports where MCO is with in the top 5 O&D passenger counts that do not have direct service to MCO. Again, room for growth.

Despite what you think about Disney and Universal and the Thousands of other Tourist Attractions in and around Orlando, they are there, and they draw millions of passengers, and will continue to do so for many years.

There was a post here last year, I can't find it now, but MCO routes are listed in ALL the Major airlines top 10 most profitable routes.

No, they weren't. I believe the posts you were referring to were for busiest routes, not most profitable.

It says a lot about Orlando's "amazing" yields, internationally, when FLL sees more international passengers than MCO, despite having no international widebody service.

I am curious why you pick FL to be the airline of choice? If there is such high business demand, wouldn't say, DL be a better fit as they offer a better product? Lets face it Orlando is a Florida market where tourism helps out a lot. I am willing to be that MCO sees roughly 6-7 million annual pax just because of Disney and Universal alone. That's not an insult, Orlando is what it is.

I am sure Florida Hospital is good, but it is not a top 10 hopsital in the United States all around. Orlando is not known for its medical facilities. The top 2 cities in the country for that are Boston and Houston.

Are you kidding me? You mean to tell me when the AARP hosts a convention in Orlando, people aren't looking for a cheap fare? I have news for you, if a company is going to send a large contingent to a convention, they are not going to be sending them first class.

To be honest, I am willing to bet a major reason LH decided to start weekly, emphasize weekly, service is to 1. cater to the German tourists going to Florida, and 2, help relieve MIA and create a greater presence in a popul;ar tourist region for Germans.

Doubt all you want.....it was several post that listed the profitability of airline routes.

Since I can't produce it and you can't disprove it....I'll consider the whole point mute... but the point that MCO continues to grow at a pace higher than the national average is FACT. How's FLL and MIA doing on that point??

I would hope that FLL would have more international passenger being the international hub for one airline and a focus city for another.

MCO is not the hub, nor focus city of any airline and trails FLL by approx 150,000 passengers per year. I'm sure that will change shortly.

.In 2006, Miami traffic grew 4.9%, compared to MCO's 1.5% growth.

Following huge cuts by Delta and US Airways, FLL fell 4.6%, but this year they are on pace a great year as traffic is bouncing back thanks to Spirit, Southwest, and jetBlue expansion.

So far this year, FLL is up 2.7%, MCO is up 2.7%, and MIA is up 1.97%.

You might want to check your "facts", because last year, Orlando grew at below the national average.

Boston, Charlotte, Denver, JFK, Las Vegas, Miami, Newark, and Seattle are among the airports that grew faster than Orlando last year.

No it won't. FLL's international traffic considers to grow considerably faster than MCO's. The gap is getting wider. So far this year, FLL's international traffic is up by double digits, while MCO's is down.

I am curious why you pick FL to be the airline of choice?

FL is based in Orlando. They are beginning to recognize this fact (it has escaped them the past few years apparently) and are moving to become more involved in the community. If they would take a Midwest like approach to building local community support and relationships with area businesses, they could build Orlando even further.

Quoting B752OS (Reply 17):
Lets face it Orlando is a Florida market where tourism helps out a lot. I am willing to be that MCO sees roughly 6-7 million annual pax just because of Disney and Universal alone.

Certainly. Orlando is overserviced based on its population. But that does not mean that it does not have business traffic. Song, MetroJet and Ted treated us like everyone going or coming to Orlando was a tourist.

I am sure Florida Hospital is good, but it is not a top 10 hopsital in the United States all around.

M.D. Anderson Cancer Center at FL Hospital; FL Hosp recognized the past six years by US News as one of "America's Best Hospitals," performs more complex cardiac cases than any other hospital in the country, Top 100 hospitals for Cardiac care -- Modern Healthcare, "Top 10 Hospital for Joint Replacement" (Orthopedic Network News) -- more at: http://www.flhosp.org/homepage/index.htm

Just because you haven't heard of it does not mean that people don't show up. It is the busiest hospital system in the country, and it's not just because Florida's full of old folks.

You mean to tell me when the AARP hosts a convention in Orlando, people aren't looking for a cheap fare?

Well the Orlando-Orange County Convention Center is pretty much booked through like 2025. I'm sure AARP and the few other examples of non-business conventions don't have all those dates.

Quoting B752OS (Reply 17):
they are not going to be sending them first class.

They may not send every employee first class, but some will fly first class.

Convention traffic is often booked in bulk, and at heavily discounted rates. Anybody who thinks convention traffic is akin to typical business traffic is delusional. It is profitable, and an easy way to fill flights, but it by no means "high yielding" when most of it is booked in bulk and significantly in advance. It is just a better yielding version of vacation package groups.

Depends on the convention. If it's a large corporation's convention for its employees, then possibly. If it is an industry convention where many companies are sending employees, perhaps not. There was a convention in MSY when I flew there back in February and FL J was full of employees from various beer distributorships. Heck, just to be more anecdotal, the company my father works for is a large manufacturing corporation owned by a group like TPG -- they book their tickets to the company convention individually, and many of them fly FL J MCO-LAS.

Often a convention will pre-reserve seats in bulk on flights, give companies a special discount code, and then they will book the flights on their own, using the discount code, at the discounted prices that were arranged by the convention.

Sometimes they will fly J/F, and often at pre-arranged discounted J/F rates. Convention traffic is profitable. It is not, however, high-yielding.

25 B752OS : Well to be honest, usually older people have joint replacements. You are not going to see a 30 year old person having knees replaced like you would a
26 ConcordeBoy : Though it's probably not consistent, IINM, doesn't AV schedule (as well as sub) 767s into FLL from time to time? um ...que?
27 Mcofreak : Wn will stay the top carrier for a while at MCO as they keep expanding and expanding. I saw a prelimary schedule for the beginning of next year and it
