When isn't it a US 757 with the Black and Gold??? Oh wait, the evening of Feb 5, 2006 or sometime the next day, when it was a 767 on DTW-PIT after the Super Bowl. I think they came back on a 767...

Yeah, I think you're right...

I do remember they had the ATC callsign specially changed for those two flights (PIT-DTW and DTW-PIT) to "Steeler One," which was pretty cool.

On an ATA L-1011 !!!

ESPN was just reporting that the first plane sent to Hattiesburg for Southern Miss did not have the range for all the weight USM put on it. I can not find a FlightAware record for it though. I am imagining that there was simply a last minute sub. Anyone have any info?

On Flightaware, it was scheduled for a 753 out of BWI and then it was changed to the L-1011 out of DFW.

Would or could they refuel a 753 at PIB or would they normally tanker the fuel in?

Also, only a 6501 foot runway at PIB.

Circle Mapper shows PIB-BOI at 1,464 nm and BWI-PIB-BOI at 2,238 nm.

I heard that also, (didn't the reported refer to it as a regional aircraft?) I thought the L-1011 was a overkill, but what the heck, the L-1011 had to be a sight in Hattiesburg. Didn't she (reporter) also state the L-1011 had a engine go out while flying to BOI. According to flightaware, the Tristar left just after midnight on a ferry flight to SEA.

ATA doesn't send in aircraft into unconventional, small airports without first doing extensive research and running the numbers (per say) beforehand. With that said, it is possible that if they wanted a new payload sooner to the flight they could do a swap...which it appears to have been the case for that flight.

According to flightaware, the Tristar left just after midnight on a ferry flight to SEA.

It ferried to SEA to continue to OKO and then DNA, and then comes back to SEA through OKO. This is a regular, fixed military charter (Patriot Express flight specifically) that is operated every Thursday through Saturday.

However, the flight to OKO (flight 5079) hasn't left yet, and it usually leaves around 9am PDT on Thursday. I wouldn't be surprised if there was an engine out into BOI, and they simply ferried the aircraft to BOI on two engines, and let maintenance deal with it in SEA. I don't know if this is the case though, just speculation.

ATA - an honestly different airline.

I did not say that they did. I did not indicate any fault on ATA's part for the equipment change. I was simply speculating that ESPN's story was, like most media forays into aviation matters, incorrect. I was primarily thinking that that USM had informed ATA of additional lift need.

Yeah I didn't mean to come off as it might have sounded, sorry  Smile

By the way, if anyone does have that link to the ESPN video mentioning the flight, I'd be really interested.

It was the female sideline reporter in tonight game, which looks like Southern Miss is going to have a long flight home tonight.
