I challenge all of our wonderful German photographers to get us some more UPS pictures from CGN on AIRLINERS.NET. I believe B757, B727 and the good old B747 are being flown in and out of there (probably during the night, but I know you can do it). Currently there is only one picture existing and it is over 5 years old.

Thanks to Chris Sheldon and Rob Simmons who have finally gotten us Qantas B744 pictures @ JFK.

The problem of night-photos is, that the cargo area is grown very much in the last five years and the the UPS-aria is far in the back. Seen from the Terminal you first see DHL, then LH-Cargo and others and at last UPS with Channel Express. Most of the UPS-aircraft you cannot recognize. At night you only can make photos when the planes are taxiing to RWY14L - this begins at about 3.30 AM in the morning, the 747 takes off at 6.00 AM.

Here are some Infos on UPS at cologne (for photographers):
on sunday the 747-100/200 is landing at about 12:30 PM and in the afternoon 2 B767 are landing. Then photos can be made without the problem of darkness.

Further on sunday the whole european 727-Fleet of UPS is parked at cargo area 2. They can be watched from a forest near RW25 (near Cargo Area 2 / from the Terminal you can´t see them because to far away and buildings in front of).

CGN is not served by 757 - UPS uses only 747/767/727.

Hope these infos will help someone.

I usually don´t make photos, but perhaps I will try it next time.

best regards
nightfly

The 727-100 QF's are used in Europe quite a bit. The 757's internationally are being used extensively in Latin America and in Asia. The 747 flight will probably end when the MD-11 comes on line. The reason is the noise constraints in Europe. While the 747 classics still meet most noise regulations in Europe alot of countries are putting restrictions on them. The MD-11 so far hasn't experienced this as far as I know. The 767's will also serve EDDK.

757-visits of UPS are exceptions at CGN.

In the future a change from 747 to MD11F is expected. Lufthansa Cargo did that on the night route CGN-EWR too. In a few years the 747-100 will be not allowed to operate between 22.00 PM and 6.00 AM here. this problem will be not by using the MD11.

Here in cologne there a lot of problems with people who are against the noise of airtraffic.
Due to that UPS lets their 747 take off at 6.00 AM since september 2000. This should be a sign to the aviation-terrorists.

best regards,
nightfly

Thanks for the information NIGHTFLY. One correction, according to the UPS schedule there seems to be plenty of B757 traffic from CGN, but no B767... http://www.ipapilot.org/jssche.txt

On one of my visits to CGN I saw a UPS 747 on the background.
I took a photo of this condor 757-300 but as you can see the UPS 747 is also on it.

You also see the problem why these UPS aircraft at CGN are not that much in the database, they are parked too far away.

The UPS Compass Database lists only the 757 and not the 767. This is due to both aircraft using the same crew. The 767 flys to EDDK or CGN. If you look you will notice no 767's even listed.
Hope that helps

The 757 is taking over several of the 727-100QF flights at CGN. MAD, VLC, and soon the VIE trip, have gone to the 757. We also fly TLV with a 757. UPS still crews the CPH, WAW, and TSF-CIA 727-100QF trips. We are supposed to start crewing Oslo and Helsinki soon with the 727. Other 727-100QF flights are crewed by Star Air.

Hey UPS Pilot, do they differentiate 767 and 757s by flight nos? I've noticed that some sort of numbering system is used (6000s) for flights to/from Mexico.

Hi DE727UPS,

Thanks for this new Info!

When will the replacement begin? Or did it just begin. I was only 1 time at CGN last month and couldn´t note replacements 727 of UPS.

In November I was spotting at CGN at night one time and noted only 747/767/727 of UPS.

Sometimes during autumn I was watching cargo area 2 where I could see the complete 727-fleet.

Did something happen concerning replacement of 727 until that?

Any info appreciated!

Thanx,
nightfly

The 757 only recently took over the Madrid and Barcelona/Valiencia (sp?) trips and is supposed to take over Vienna soon. This was within the last couple of months. The TLV trip is new to UPS within the last few months and was never flown by the 727. The volume levels must be picking up and they need some larger airplanes on some trips. Star Air crews many of our aircraft in Europe, right now we only crew three of the 727 runs. WAW, CIA-TSF, and VIE.....as I mentioned VIE is supposed to go to the 757 but we should pick up Helsinki and Oslo by summer. I'm not sure if Helsinki and Olso are already trips flown by Star or not. Hope this answers your questions.
